Summary
When Steve finally finds Bucky in the Russian wilderness, it seems entirely reasonable to join him on his mission to destroy a Hydra base. The plan is solid, and whatever Bucky remembers of him or of them, they still work well together.
Only things go sideways, and Steve is gravely injured, leaving him stuck in a wreck of his own making with a former lover who may not even remember him and no way for them to call for help.

“What about you, Barnes?” asks Dugan. The sound of his voice brings Bucky back to the present, dredges him out of memories of a beat-up little apartment with sunlight streaming in through the windows. “Got yourself a girl waiting for you back home?”
There’s an answer on the tip of his tongue, one that he’ll deliver with a cocky grin and a half-laugh and a little shake of his head. But Bucky is exhausted and hungry and so sore it hurts to move, and one of the guys in their platoon fucking died yesterday. His mouth tastes like iodine water and his feet hurt and none of it’s going to get better any time soon, and all at once Bucky misses Steve so badly he can barely see straight.
“Yeah,” Bucky declares abruptly, the word escaping from his mouth before he fully realizes what he’s saying. “Yeah, I do.”

“I won’t subject another person to the horror that is my mouth,” Foggy says, darkly, “and I will not kiss a pillow, buddy, because—been there, done that, and the remaining scraps of my dignity wouldn’t survive it.”
Matt has an idea. He has an idea that he knows he shouldn’t say out loud, because Foggy’s okay with hugging him and cuddling and maybe sometimes holding hands when they’re drunk and it suddenly seems very urgent that hands are held, but—this is different.
“You could kiss me,” Matt says, very casually, because he is an idiot.

“No, wait,” Matt says, after a second, stepping in to catch Foggy’s arm gently. “You know I’m cool with it, right?”
“With me objectifying you?” Foggy asks, a little strangled.
Matt’s mouth falls open for a moment before it turns into a grin instead, cheeks flushing a little. He’s still holding Foggy’s arm and is aggressively shirtless. It feels significant.
“I don’t hate it,” Matt admits, shrugging. His fingers squeeze a little before he drops his hand and turns back around. “I mean, I’m straight but it’s fine if you wanna, like—look at me.”
Foggy leans against the doorframe and watches Matt towel himself off, feeling like his soul might actually leave his body.

Sam bent down, sitting on the balls of his feet as he touched the newly minted space. He could feel the static of it, almost like touching a live wire, but not quite as fatal. Just – strangely fuzzy; a jolt to the system that made Sam sharpened his focus.
There was more than just space; there was an entire gap. Sam frowned, unsure what that meant. There had been just enough for a space when Riley came into his life for Riley to carve his name. What did it mean that a whole expanse had grown near Sam’s place on the porch?
Maybe it would be someone with huge handwriting?
Though.
Was Sam ready for that?
A new familiar in his life. A new romance. A new partner in his magics. Not to replace Riley, no, but someone who would live in spaces Riley once had all to himself.
