“Why are you awake?” She is cutting you bread. It is improper, because you are her servant, but she is smiling sweet and gentle at you and doing it anyway. You fiddle with your skirt, your apron. Glancing down and up at her over and over again. She's always been like this, but you find it troubles you. You never know how to act. She takes a sip of her wine. “Having trouble with nightmares again?”
She is hard to make out in the candle light. It flickers warmly, ominously over your faces. You shiver. It feels cold. The wine is blood red, and the bread is warm when you take it from her hands, fingers brushing. You hesitantly take a bite of it, nibbling on the sides. It tastes like lavender. It tastes like how she smells. You wonder how she tastes, eyes catching on her lips that kindly, so sweetly smile at you. You look down. You do not ask her how she knows you have nightmares.
