This did get a laugh from her: a single panting sound, and then she went quiet. Her waist was a heartbreaking dip to hold. She had a dot of a mole next to her spine. Her hair was long enough that she had to hold it out of the way so it wouldn’t get tangled in the knot. Lan Zhan’s touch must have been a little cold because Wei Ying’s skin rose in bumps and she huffed and Lan Zhan rested a hand on her hip. Lan Zhan was dry-mouthed, traced a line of the ribbon with her thumb. She asked Wei Ying, voice low: “And how will Wei Ying untie this, by herself?”

She can’t blame Lil’ Apple! She also likes Lan Zhan more than she likes herself!), but it’s how she got here in the larger metaphysical sense that she doesn’t understand. There were thirteen years where she wasn’t here, after all, and very many places in the past year where she could have ended up not here again, but somehow she’s here, and—miracle of miracles—so is Lan Zhan.
Really, it’s the Lan Zhan part that she still struggles to understand.

Wei Ying collapses to cross-legged with a bounce that shakes the whole couch, barely managing to do it without landing on Lan Zhan’s legs. (She does manage it, though, because she’s a genius.) She pauses long enough to evaluate her options and then flings herself basically into Lan Zhan’s lap, wiggling around and flailing annoyingly and actively taking up as much space as possible. When she’s done she has her head resting on Lan Zhan’s pelvis, arm wrapped around one of Lan Zhan’s thighs where it arcs over her shoulder, and legs draped over the arm of the couch. It’s very warm, and very secure, and extremely comfortable.
It is also easily more intimate than they’ve ever been before (not counting the sock wrestling), which probably breaks at least five Rules (Wei Ying will not be listing which ones), and Wei Ying can feel her heartbeat pounding nervously in her throat.
