Belly was cut short of her wandering thoughts of QB1’s hands when Taylor’s voice cut through.
“Holy shit, B. You should ask Conrad Fisher,”
“No way. He doesn’t talk to anyone,” Belly said, shaking her head, trying to sound firm but failing when her eyes flicked back toward the field.
Taylor waved a hand at her like that settled it. “Exactly. Which is why you have to. It’s like a challenge. A Hail Mary, if you will.”
Belly groaned, dragging a hand down her face and rolling her eyes. “Taylor, I don’t even know him. He’s… he’s Conrad Fisher. He’s practically untouchable. The whole stadium cheers just for him to blink and breathe.”
Taylor laughed, giving her a playful nudge. “That’s literally the point. You either ask and he says yes, or you ask and he says no. Either way, you never have to see him again, and he graduates next spring. There’s literally no harm in asking him.” -

“Conrad,” she murmured, though it wasn’t mocking when it left her lips this time. It was a plea. A prayer. A weak, wounded sound she knew he’d never be able to resist. It was an injury he could heal. A problem he could fix. An absence he could fill to stop her from feeling any more pain. In short, it was specifically designed to go straight to Conrad Fisher’s heart, bypassing his brain and all its honorable intentions completely to settle in that aching cavity above his ribs.

Belly looks up at him from her lashes, lips upturned, as she goes to grab the fruit. His hand brushes hers, smooth skin warm in the heat, and she moves back to shake her hair from her face while he turns to put another bill in the tin before holding the peach up and biting sharply into it.
Conrad turns to face her again. She holds the fruit from her face, laughing slightly in disbelief. Her mouth is shiny and wet.
His heartbeat is loud. A steady, beating drum. “Was it as good?”
She nods with wide eyes. “Yeah, it was,” Belly says, laughing again as she licks her lips and brings the peach to her mouth again. She turns it over, catching his gaze as she takes another bite, eyes alight; the clank of flint on steel, kindle catching fire.
