Grantaire was astonished that this was the part of his explanation that Enjolras appears to have been troubled by the most. With an incredulous laugh, Grantaire tells him, ”I would not ask that of you.”
“Why not?” Enjolras, perplexed, reacts as if Grantaire is the one being absurd for not suggesting he do so. But he remains pragmatic, as if they were discussing the state of the Republic or philosophical pursuits. “You provide me with your blood, why should you not receive anything in return?”
