Summary
Killing had always been the only form of intimacy Durge had ever known. He’d watch his victims' masks slip away, pauper and patriar alike, replaced by primal nature: fear of death, fear of pain, the atavistic desperation to avoid both. He would let their fingers scrabble uselessly at him as he drained them of life-essence at Bhaal’s bloody altar; this was often the only touch he’d feel, as everyone else around Durge was rightfully terrified of him. He enjoyed hearing his victims' breathless secrets, long-held and now offered in useless desperation, to avoid the cruel lash of Bhaal. The depravity excited him, relieving his murderous Urge sated him and almost filled the gnawing emptiness within; all in all, Durge enjoyed his job as Bhaal’s Chosen. Life was a daily grind of flesh into offal on the shrine of his father.
Until one day, an ornate letter inviting Durge to the offices of Lord Enver Gortash, Chosen of Bane, appeared, incongruously lovely and clean on Durge’s bloodstained desk in the temple of Bhaal.
