    Shrugging one shoulder far more casually than he possibly feels, Ilya says, “I like both. Is secret, okay?”

    “Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.

    He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.

    Nobody knows why Shane Hollander dropped out of the 2009 draft at the last second, and a year later it stuns the whole hockey world when he's signed by the Boston Raiders. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston - but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

    Loving Shane Hollander had taught Ilya Rozanov how to slow down.

    They had a plan now. A life that made sense. Something quiet, stable, and boring. For once, Ilya believed peace might be something he could actually have, not just something he pretended not to want.

    Then Troy Barrett arrives from Toronto and starts looking at what Ilya has built like it’s something he might take. Like peace is something might need too.

    Ilya tells himself it’s nothing. A misunderstanding. He plays captain. He plays fair. He plays nice.

    But loathing has always come easier than love, and once everything starts to unravel, Ilya learns there are only so many times you can choose peace before you are forced to show how far you’ll go to keep Shane Hollander to yourself.

    Troy Barrett wants Shane badly enough to burn with the ship. Ilya is determined to get rid of him before everything between him and his freckled love falls apart but what happens after it does?

    “Did I do something wrong?”

    “No. No, Hollander,” Ilya coughed, eyes flitting around the room. “Is just– Is too much.”

    “This is… too much?” Shane repeated slowly, incredulously. “We see each other maybe once a month. Less, even.”

    “No. Is not that– You are just,” Ilya swore under his breath in Russian. His accent was getting thicker, the words clunkier, in the way it always got stronger when he was frustrated or tired. Shane hated himself for recognizing it. “...too much.”

    OR

    In the Heated Rivalry book, Ilya intends to break things off with Shane the night of the All-Star Game, but then Shane gets hurt. What if Shane never gets injured by Marlow, and Ilya really does break things off?

    (Basically, a shit ton of angst and Shane Hollander learning to love himself. There will be a happy ending!)

    No serious hockey fan or sports commentator worth their salt would have considered record-breaking Boston superstar Ilya Rozanov to be Shane Hollander’s rival exactly, but sleeping with a man who had a specific offense-related vendetta against him and a wrist shot like a jet engine to back it up was probably ill-advised just the same.

    Or, Shane is a goalie. Ilya can’t score.
