Summary
Nino had given up his life for the royal family—first as an obligation, out of love for his father; then of love for the family itself; and at last a vow, requited. He has measured most of his time not by the monuments of his life but by Jean’s. Since marrying him, it has been easier to merge the two concepts, to measure not by each of their lives as separate entities but by both, together.
A former lifetime of acting opposite of their now is not undone so quickly. Nino has small moments where he wonders if something is alright to do, because how would it reflect on the royal family, on Jean’s blessedly ignorant self? The ghosts of his old doubts arise at this call from Dowa when they want photographs of the district whose sands had drunk his blood and not a drop of his regret.
Movement, a murmur: Jean is waking up. He blinks a few times then smiles up at Nino, sleep’s cloying sweetness clinging on to him.
“Mr. Otus-Ninox?” asks Magie.
“Yes,” Nino replies, still looking at Jean. “I’ll do it. But—I’ll need accommodations for two, I think.”
