Mr. Whelk didn't say anything, didn't even move his eyes up to the sound of Adam's voice. He exchanged a look with Ronan and suddenly, for just a second, they seemed to be on the same page. This is strange, Adam told Ronan with his eyes. No fucking shit, Ronan tried to tell him back which only made Adam's eyes roll in exasperation.
He stood then, slowly inching to the desk. A scream sounded outside, Adam didn't recognise the voice but he understood the fear, the anguish, the tell-tale sign of someone who just lost hope.
Something slammed against what sounded like glass next to him and Adam jumped back. There was a split-second where he turned to look at the window, hoping it was just a bird, but they were on the ground floor and someone, no, something, was trying to get inside.

“Yeah? Which was the big guy downstairs? Because my good Catholic upbringing didn’t make the distinction.”
Out of nervous habit, Ronan brings his wrist up to his mouth and chews on the leather bands there. He’s been wearing them and chewing on them since he was sixteen. It’s a wonder there’s anything left to them at all. He feels the same way about his good Catholic upbringing.
“I think,” Adam says, quiet now. “That he wasn’t very nice, but that he wasn’t ever given a reason to be. I think it was self-defense.” It’s an explanation that sounds both close to home and far away. He looks up and out the window. His gaze gets caught there, distracted for the first time since they started.
Ronan looks as well, but it’s dark out now and all he can see is the shadow box reflection of the room against the black behind. Set against the rest of it, Adam’s hunched over reflection looks small and dark. Ronan is little more than a few swaths of stark negative space cut against the white glow. Neither of them has a halo.
(Or, that one where Adam is an art major and Ronan agrees to model for a sculpture of Satan.)

If you ever run into somebody you think you could be interested in and then you realize being around them makes you jittery, you’ll know that’s not it. But the sensation you get when you do meet them—” He paused, scrubbing a hand over his chin. “It’s less like meeting, and more like your entire being saying, Oh, yeah, there he is. Or, you know, her, or they, or whoever. It’s like—it’s like coming back to a home you’ve been gone from so long you forgot it existed, and then you see it again and you can’t believe you ever left.”

He feels as helpless now as the terrified boy he’d been when he’d first moved out of that trailer, aching for that wretched home despite himself and lacking any sense of who he was and what he wanted. Cabeswater had given him so much, had given him everything: strength, power, magic. Love.

Adam frowns, eyes flickering from the door to meet Ronan’s gaze already leveled on him. He inhales slowly, Ronan’s eyes holding his, reading him in a way Adam hadn’t believed possible until he had proved it again and again. Adam exhales, rolling onto his side to properly face the other, head cradled in his palm as he considers his own thought a second time before speaking it.
“We could help."
“A handjob’s not gonna fix his problems, Parrish.”
