Summary
“What do I do then? Go back and wait until they kill me, too? How can I prove that I am telling the truth?” Merlin asked and looked Arthur deep in the eyes. He could tell that Arthur wanted to believe him. He saw compassion and care within these blue eyes.
But he also saw a duty too big for such young shoulders, a crown that barely fit his head and a responsibility that weighed him down. He was so young for the power he held and Merlin could tell, he could see and he believed with everything he was that Arthur intended to use that power for good.
Arthur, he decided, was a good man.
Or: Merlin seeks help for his people in Winterfell and meets a young king entirely unlike his expectations.

Merlin paused, took a deep breath, and a delicate, red band appeared in front of him, softly flowing in the breeze. It was wrapped around his wrist and then disappeared into the distance.
Merlin took it between his fingers, held it as he focused on the gentle pull he felt. With his eyes, he followed the faint thread into the distance and couldn’t help but wonder who might be awaiting him on the other side.

Summary
The car came to a stop with screeching brakes. Merlin took a sharp breath, felt a panic bubble just beneath the surface of the composed trained doctor he was supposed to be, and reached for the door handle to get out and assess the situation when a sharp, calculated movement made him halt and stare disbelievingly through the windshield.
He only realised then that it was severely cracked, probably only a gust of wind away from breaking. When he refocused his attention to the person on his engine hood, he didn’t believe his eyes. Said person, a man, wasn’t flung across the hood anymore but standing in front of his car, dramatically illuminated by the headlight’s of Merlin’s truck.
He was brushing off his coat and then quickly looked up, like acknowledging Merlin’s presence was nothing but an afterthought to him. Merlin caught his gaze and he froze. He felt his body shut down while his mind raced, borderlining a nervous breakdown somewhere between the shock of hitting someone and suddenly staring into the eyes of a memory he had tried to forget for too long.
Blood red eyes were staring back at him and they made his heart race with a dangerous mixture of careful hope and pure adrenaline.

Summary
When he woke, the sun barely past the horizon, all he saw was Arthur’s rolled up mat. He groaned and turned onto his other side only to be welcomed by the sight of Arthur’s backside. The king himself was trying to light a fire.
Merlin’s gaze kept on flickering from Arthur’s backside to his efforts with the firewood. He knew he shouldn’t, but Arthur really couldn’t see him right now. With a quick thought, the fire lit up and he could see the way Arthur’s composure shifted to something self-confident and happy.
Merlin grinned and closed his eyes but the smile wouldn’t leave his face. If only it were always this easy to make Arthur happy.
“Merlin,” he heard Arthur chime way too close to his ear and he jumped slightly, staring right into mischievously glinting blue eyes.
“Now, who are you dreaming about?” Arthur asked and sat back on his heels, grinning at Merlin, who felt blood rushing to his cheeks. He still grinned back and crossed his arms behind his head.
“Definitely someone prettier than you,” he shrugged and smiled into the sky.
Arthur scoffed at that and took off his glove only to throw it at him.

He didn’t usually reside to higher powers to protect him. Whenever issues arose, whenever he faced death there was something to do, someone to help him. Never before had he faced his demise with such certainty and never before had he been so utterly alone.
Wherever Merlin was now, Arthur prayed he was still alive, not buried underneath an avalanche of stones.
“Arthur!”
His thoughts were interrupted as he felt a weight on top of him that shielded his body before the chaos re-erupted and the cave was filled with overwhelming noise.

“Arthur, look at her. Isn’t she cute?” Merlin asked, holding his phone right into Arthur’s face. Arthur, who was currently working out, doing his last set of pushups.
“Merlin, please,” he grunted, trying to get past the phone in front of him.
“Look at her! Isn’t she adorable?” Merlin ignored him, showing him a video of a little kitten.
“Merlin, I am kind of in the middle of something here,” Arthur groaned and finally looked at the video. He had to admit, it was absolutely adorable.
“Yes, Merlin, she’s cute. I still need her to get out of my face though,” Arthur gave in and Merlin reluctantly took the phone away.

The whistle rang through the stadium once more and Arthur took a deep breath, eyes on the ball because he didn’t dare looking up. When he finally did, quickly locating the irritating keeper right in the middle and he looked like a spider in his net, ready to strike.
Arthur hesitated for just a moment but he saw the keeper start to grin before Arthur had even hit the ball. The moment Arthur shot, the man had already jumped right into the corner where the ball was headed. The impact of the ball seemed to knock the air out of him but the stupid grin didn’t falter for a second.

“Merlin, do you plan on just watching while others work?” Arthur asked him, standing right next to him, head slightly tilted towards him, Merlin had a hard time focusing on his words.
He was so damn close and he looked so incredibly good with this sly grin on his lips, mockery in his endless blue eyes.
“Yes, I… I’ll take care of the horses, Sire,” Merlin replied stutteringly. God, why was he stuttering? It was Arthur for god’s sake.
“See that you do,” Arthur replied and winked at him before turning around which left Merlin stunned for a moment. Arthur never winked.

“Arthur?” Merlin called through the flat, trying to localize his boyfriend.
“Yeah?” was the rather uninspired answer, coming from the general direction of their bedroom. Merlin followed the voice and broke into laughter upon seeing Arthur.
He was sitting on the ground, their basket with DVDs and CDs in front of him, multiple of them scattered around him while he held two in his hands. Arthur looked up at him and the innocent puppy’s eyes he was giving Merlin didn’t help make the image any less hilarious.

“Get up, you sleepyhead. Arthur, I know you hear me. Wake up, there is something I need to show you,” Merlin said quietly and Arthur slowly opened up his eyes, looking right into Merlin’s face.
“Now, get dressed,” Merlin commanded and Arthur tried to turn around again.
Merlin wasn’t having any of that and pulled away his blanket.
“Get. Up.”
Arthur groaned and tried to roll out of the bed. It took every bit of Arthur’s tired coordination to not fall right onto the floor. Merlin giggled quietly and threw one of his shirts at him.
“Now, hurry.”
