Summary
Ray drives off. Sand follows.
"Can—" his voice breaks, and he's left wordless for a second. Ray is loaded into the back of the ambulance. "Can I come? There's—no one else will come. I need to be there. He can't be alone."
None of what he's saying should be true, but it is, the words tasting sour in his mouth.
He needs to be there.

"Akk," whispered Ayan from across the room. It was immediately lost in the gloom. Akk could have easily imagined it, had it not been for: "Ai'Akk." The soft sound of rearranging sheets.
Akk gathered himself to make a strangled noise of acknowledgement; anything else and he would lose his grip on the careful edge of self containment.
"Akk," Ayan said, "it will be okay."
Or, Akk's life is going fine. He's fine with his strained friendships, he's fine with what happened at Suppalo, and he's certainly fine ignoring his new roommate, Ayan, during his third year at university. Nothing needs to change.
Nothing will change, if Akk has anything to say about it.

Fjord finds he's not the only one still awake at this late hour. Unfortunately, Caduceus isn't quite as keen on taking a midnight swim as he is.

"Fjord, you know I support you in all your endeavors," Caduceus begins. "But I also know what it sounds like when you have... an idea.""An idea?" Fjord repeats. "What do you mean, an idea?"
"Like touching weird objects. Or pushing buttons. Things like that."
Fjord scowls. "I was just going to ask if you--um. Wanted to go swimming."
Caduceus blinks.

Summary
Caduceus Clay's graveyard is burned to ashes. He wakes up on the side of the road with no place to go, and hitches a ride with the first person who will take him away from Shady Creek Run: Ophelia Mardun.
Caleb Widogast's life is burnt to the ground. He wakes up in a healer's room, remembering the screams of his parents, and sets off to Zadash in hope of some form of revenge, or perhaps simply a way to move on.
A different set of circumstances leads to a different road, and a new story.
