Summary
Jim Kirk, son to the Ambassadors of Earth, spends his days aboard the Enterprise performing mind-numbing duties that fall way below his skill set as a Starfleet officer. He wants to prove to his parents that he's capable of having a more important role on the ship, and that his passion for Starfleet's mission of exploration and discovery are being wasted in his lonely duties on the lower decks.
Spock, son to Vulcan Prime Minister Sarek and Vulcan Ambassador Amanda Grayson, also dreams of a life unconstrained from his parents' expectations. The upcoming alliance talks between Vulcan and the Federation are his chance to show them that he could be more than just a lowly scientist on Vulcan -- that his work could extend further into the galaxy and allow for greater scientific discovery. But personal obligations are currently keeping him tied to Vulcan, and he's prepared to do whatever it takes to leave them behind.
Both of them want more for themselves than the lives handed to them by their parents. And when the two of them meet, there’s nothing in the galaxy that will keep them apart.

Riot’s close-range chemical messages carried strange accents of complex biomolecules Venom had never felt before. The taste was a clear indication of just how much of Riot must have been shaped by past hosts and alien genetic information from beyond the stars. Venom wanted.

Jim shuffled through the PADDs on Bones’ desk, found his personal PADD and powered it up. The open window on the PADD brought him to a halt. It was open to the last message, which had been sent to Captain Christopher Pike. Jim quickly scanned the message and felt his sense of disorientation and nausea returning. It was a letter of resignation. Jim dropped heavily into the desk chair and tried to get his mind to focus as he reread the document before him.

Bones resigns from Starfleet and Jim follows him to Georgia where he convinces Bones to marry him for legal reasons, so that they can contest the adoption of Joanna McCoy. They return to the academy, keep the marriage a secret and attempt to continue their lives as normally as possible. But the marriage is never far from mind.
