It had taken everything he had not to call out to her, not to go touch her long, beautiful hair or wrap his arms around her slender waist or kiss her sweet lips. But he’d known he needed to be more careful than that. That if anyone from her parents’ world contacted her—even him—it would put her in danger, cost him his job, and cause her to disappear into the wind with a new identity somewhere he couldn’t follow her. He’d needed a plan, and over the course of the last ten months, he’d concocted it, perfected it, combed over it in fine detail as he spent his weekends following her through parks and the mall, watching her study through her window, keeping an eye on her soccer matches. Learning her. Observing her. Cultivating his feelings for her until they overwhelmed him; she deserved nothing less than every ounce of love he had to give, after all.
