There is something—be it the coldness of the night, the darkness of the sky, the wails of the naked branches in the wind—that seems to freeze her inhibitions or encourage her impulsivity, and she feels a confession of her own being born at the tip of her tongue. And the person she was months ago would have swallowed it down even if it choked her, choosing to let it die as a secret than live as a truth, but she isn’t the person from back then either.
“I get it,” she murmurs, because she can’t bring herself to say it louder than a timid whisper. “I understand how you feel.”

"How old are you anyway?" Alvin asks.
"Uhm…" Jude says again. "Eighteen?" He winces at his pause and the uncertainty in his voice. He'd practised the lie in the mirror two dozen times, but reality is different.
Alvin laughs, leaning in closer so Jude has to lean back a little, the wooden edge of the bar digging in his lower back.
"You wanna try that again, kid, with a little more conviction this time?"

Malevola has him pinned against her side, hanging onto him like she’s afraid he’s going to get swallowed by the drunken crowd. Sonar is on her other side, ears glowing faintly with the strobe lights as he knocks into her repeatedly.
Visi swings by, wipes the corner of his mouth, then disappears. Hot hands find his head a second- seconds? minutes? later. The flash of orange and black coming closer has him swaying dangerously to catch whatever Flambae starts to mutter against his ear. Something about shitty music?
Coop saunters past with a glint of metal, prying the empty tumbler from his hand. Punch Up appears with a full one to replace it. It makes his face flush when he takes a swig.
“Yo! Anyone seen Golem?” Prism pushes through. She’s got Waterboy by the wrist; She might be about to use him to purposely slip people and get them out of her way. Phenomaman is floating after them.
Visi comes back again, this time with Blazer holding on for dear life. They’re hugging like it’s the end of the world instead of just being drunk in a shitty bar. Blazer smiles, dimples showing. His vision swims.
The whiskey burns. So does the ache in his chest.

Ling had traced the Vulpecula constellation with an elegant finger and told Ed he’d been born under the autumn constellation. That his mother said he was destined to grow up plagued by hardships and strife but would find fortune and love under the same stars.
He said he was born in the year of the ‘little fox’, and Ed had laughed, told him it was fitting.
Ling had taken Ed’s hand and together pointed towards the horizon, drawing an erratic path between stars that Ed hadn’t recognized. Told him he was born in the year of the dung beetle because he was a little shit. Emphasis on the ‘little’.
“Wouldn’t we be the same animal?” Ed had asked. “We’re the same age.” And Ling smiled, the soft one that never failed to make Ed’s knees go weak, and admitted that technically Ed was older by a scant thirteen months, but it hadn’t been worth mentioning because Western ages are rather primitive and unimaginative and they lack soul and ingenuity and Ed had cut him off with a fistful of grass to the face, the night dissolving into the carefree laughter that Ed has only ever been able to attribute to Ling.
