Her staff is polished and cleaned every other day to prevent any sorts of obsoletion, something that never touches her opponents while her shield had been beaten and bruised and worn over the years to keep up with the calluses dictating her experience underneath her gloves—they couldn’t be any further apart; their owners couldn’t be any further apart.
It doesn’t stop her from thinking how they belong to her—how they’re the hands she imagines to be touching her now. Zani would know how to touch her, she thinks; she would understand Phoebe’s body better than she does, she’s always been so good at everything—whether it’s crunching deadlines or tugging at the strings in her system that always causes her heart to beat one point five times faster than it normally does, what would make this different?
