“Galinda?” The word cracked, uncharacteristically raw.

Her wife blinked up at her in confusion, eyes glassy and unfocused, lips parting like she was about to apologise for the mess – she was always apologising, that silly girl, even for gravity failing her.

“I… I just need… a second…” she breathed, but her voice sounded small, faraway, like a broadcast cutting to static. She felt dizzy, like she was drowning in sparkling water filling her head.

She caught Glinda by the waist just as her knees gave out. Elphaba’s grip tightened, one arm wrapping fully around her back, the other bracing the back of Glinda’s head as she lowered her gently toward her chest, shielding her from view.

“No. No more seconds.” Elphaba’s words were quiet but steel-edged, and the tremor in them betrayed a depth of fear she had been swallowing for weeks. “We’re leaving.”

    --

(Or: Glinda collapses from overworking herself whilst at a fancy gala. Elphaba, ever the gentleman, swoops in to save her wife from herself. Comes with heaping doses of the softest hurt/comfort.)

Things go slightly differently during For Good (the song, not the movie, though I suppose that applies too) and Glinda’s story ends in a far better way than it does in any other version of the story.

    “What are you doing here?”

“I should ask that of you. Seriously, Elphie, a religious convent? Who have you become?”

“A ghost,” said Elphaba. “If I'm anything at all.”

“You were always a ghost. Even back at Shiz, you were.”

Or, Glinda visits the cloister of her namesake. Things spiral from there.

    Summary

Galinda paused, her eyes tracing the soft profile of the girl's face. The way her tears hugged down the crease of her nose, the way her eyelashes, a little damp, fluttered in the soft light, and the way her lips pressed together in an attempt to hide the quivering. She leaned in, forcing Elphaba’s eyes to meet hers. Her heart skipping a little, she dabbed her finger on her cheek, wiping the tears.
“Well today is your lucky day..” she whispered, “I’m not going home.” Her eyes lit up as she nodded softly at Elphaba. Worried if she spoke too loud or too fast, Elphaba would retreat and close her off.
It felt too delicate, Galinda chose her words carefully, observing her reactions, cautiously trying to bring comfort to a girl who had never been comforted in her life.
“We are having Christmas together this year” she paused.
“What?” Elphaba whispered, turning her head in confusion.
“A proper one, not a ‘normal day’ type of thing, but proper Christmas Elphie.”
