Summary
Sleep is the one thing that evades them both. He can tell by the darkening circles under Dante’s eyes that his brother suffers as he does, uneasy and unable to properly let his guard down, but Vergil is marginally confident they’ll get over this too. They’ve graduated to being in the same room together for an extended period of time without actively trying to kill each other, after all. All things considered, they’re doing pretty well for two half-demons who barely know each other. Vergil has even stopped flinching at sudden noises.
Naturally, this is the perfect time for the local demon population to clue in that there are two Sparda-sired demons living under the same roof, and take that information as an invitation to attack.

Summary
It had started in the days after he’d finished dealing with the lingering after-effects of the Qliphoth, this strange, deep unpleasantness in the very recesses of his soul that Nero just can’t seem to shake. At first, he thought he’d just needed time, to process his feelings or whatever about the colossal upheaval of his life that had come from Urizen and his associated revelations. Or maybe he’d just needed more space, having spent too long in that cramped van with his newest chain-smoking partner in crime. Maybe he just had a really nasty stomach ache from living off canned soup and shitty bread for a month.
But as the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into a month, Nero was starting to get the feeling that there was more to this than just the emotional fallout of the Qliphoth Incident.

Summary
They fall together, through an inky darkness as black as a void, before they are deposited into what appears to be a shallow stream at the bottom of the portal. Like mirror images, they both grab their respective amulets and make a break for their father’s sword, and for a split second Dante tastes the bitterness of defeat as he sees Vergil’s fingers reach the hilt a heartbeat before his do.
Only, instead of grasping onto it, Vergil’s fingers slip straight through, like he’s just tried to grab onto air. It surprises him as much as it does Dante, and before either of them can change their course the two of them collide. For all that the impact doesn’t hurt, it still knocks Dante flat on his backside with a muted splash into water that is suddenly completely still, like it’s been frozen in time. Vergil, too, staggers backward, but manages to stay upright if only by sheer force of will. The confused outrage on Vergil’s face would be more amusing if Dante wasn’t equally as irritated by this sudden deception— not that he’s about to let Vergil in on that one, though.
“Looks like our dear old dad had one final trick up his sleeve, huh,” Dante says, plastering a wide grin on his face as he hauls himself to his feet.

Summary
Dante turns to reach for the Devil Sword Sparda, only to find the way forward is suddenly blocked. Something hard and metallic hooks into the meat of his shoulder, a heavy bar pressing against his chest, stopping his movement if only out of sheer novelty. Dante feels his jaw clench so tightly he swears he can hear his teeth creaking as he follows what turns out to be the line of V’s cane back down to its wielder. He knows how he looks when he feels like this, when dark desires stir hotly in his blood and darker thoughts swirl dangerously in his head. He knows, too, that the look he fixes V is nothing short of murderous, because V is interfering yet again in Dante’s business with his family.
Yet V does not so much as step back, instead putting even firmer pressure on Dante’s chest as though this measly chunk of steel is going to stop Dante from going anywhere.
Dante opens his mouth to make some sort of snide comment, but V beats him to the punch.
“You are ill-equipped to fight him as you are, and you cannot afford another mistake. Calm down and centre yourself. Somehow, I do not think Urizen will toss your body down here to recuperate a second time.”

Summary
With two of his familiars back at his side and their contracts renewed, black magic pouring like ink into the cracks and gorges in his skin where Malphas had ripped the binding magic out, there is only one more he must reclaim. Trepidation stirs beneath V’s skin, soft as the faintest wind through the trees, like the ghost of a warning, as he follows the phantom chain that binds them together. This last beast is his, certainly, but the memory of its taming still lingers behind his closed eyelids, a memory within a memory — a living nightmare. Though V has faced other foes of comparable size and strength, none can compare to the creature that feeds on his deepest, darkest fears.
