Summary
'I’m afraid you do not understand the implications of the situation, Wei-gongzi,' Lan Xichen said sadly.
After succumbing to a sudden and unexpected heat in the Cloud Recesses library while supervising Wei Wuxian's punishment during the Gusu lectures, the two are caught out by Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen, and Lan Wangji learns a dreadful truth about his value as an Omega to his sect. His only hope of escaping his fate hangs on the possibility that he is with child by Wei Wuxian and that Wei Wuxian will not allow anyone or anything else to claim what now belongs to him. But tensions are already high in the Cultivation world, and Lan Wangji's and Wei Wuxian's union could tip it over into war. In order to find happiness, sacrifices will have to be made.

When Qishan Wen attacks the Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji is taken as a political prisoner and brought to Nightless City, ostensibly to be educated in his new role as Wen-approved administrator to assist his brother in leading Gusu Lan as a vassal sect under Qishan Wen. Instead, he ends up as Wen Ruohan’s pawn and sent to the Burial Mounds as a gift to buy the Wen sect leader the fearsome and mysterious Yiling Laozu’s favour and allegiance in the war to come.
How will Lan Wangji prevent himself from becoming another one of the countless dead rumoured to lie buried and forgotten upon the cursed mountain? Will he even be able to survive, let alone live long enough to find his way back home?

“Hey, Lan Zhan...” Wei Wuxian unfolds his leg and gives his foot a playful kick. “I told you to think about it! This means I’d be here for a long time, taking up your time, your space, your peace. And I can’t pay you! I have nothing of worth to give. It isn’t as simple as-”
“I’ll do it,” he says again, more forcefully this time. “You don’t have to give me anything.”
Wei Wuxian looks away, hiding a small smile. Doesn’t he know Lan Wangji would do anything for him, by now? Doesn’t he understand that he holds Lan Wangji’s life in his hands?

Together, they learn how to communicate, how to ask for things, and how to touch each other.Their relationship develops in between quiet dinners in the Jingshi, meditation sessions, core training and a lot of Lan Juniors speculation on whether or not they're actually together yet.
