The parchment is expensive. Tav runs her fingertips over the wax seal and hesitates; she knows what this is. She is not surprised that it is happening, she is, however, surprised at being included in some way. Perhaps, she allows herself, she had hoped it wouldn't be so soon. (She has already put to bed the part of herself that had hoped it would not happen at all.) Gale had, after all, been very clear - and devastatingly gentle - in his explanation.

Summary
"We'll debrief later." The words felt like ash in her mouth, her own voice foreign on her tongue. She had hoped to convey an ounce of her usual even-keeled bravado, but the hollowness threatening to seize her by the throat stripped all of the emotion out of her. It was evident in her tone. No one dared to call her out on it, though.
The silence that followed was thick, viscous in the way it settled around her shoulders. It clung to the inside of her chest like smoke.

Iruka has been part of Kakashi's life for so long that it's slowly become increasingly harder to imagine it without him there. And over the course of the decade plus of their friendship, Kakashi has come to appreciate more and more that Iruka's is such a steadfast and predictable presence, when everything else around him is anything but. If asked years ago, he would have said he could never figure out how to be friends with someone as kind-hearted as Iruka. He doesn't usually enjoy being wrong - but sometimes, it's nice.
