Summary
Daniil has purpose now, and that can be enough. He can make it be. He’d lived on the dregs of nothing but self assignment and discipline for years and he’d gotten by, had gone as far as town on Gorkhon on the half life of his own ambitions. Daniil knows he can grasp a field of study with both hands, knows that despite all that has occurred in the dark and wrinkled skein of the year behind him—there is this. Purpose.
His old life restored, in a fashion, though decidedly less fashionable. Daniil finds he hardly minds. And after all of it, after each and every day of purpose, he’ll have a warm bed to return to and a beloved body to lie alongside.
Or: After a fraught and roundabout journey back to one another, Daniil and Artemy take their first steps into a shared future.

Summary
The sound of a throat being cleared kindly interrupted the inevitable argument.
"Burakh, have you got a minute?"
Artemy must have noticeably perked up at the sound of Daniil's voice if Rubin's eye roll was any indication. He turned to his partner ("Not while we're in the clinic!" The Daniil in his head admonished for his word choice), and tried not to look as thrilled to see him as he felt. "I suppose so. What do you need?"

Summary
Daniil Dankovsky was spiralling. There was no other word for it. As much as he wanted to go back to his comfortable academic life in the Capital, he found himself rotting in it instead. Past research in ruins and any ambitions of a new one pushed aside in favour of alcohol and pointless wallowing. The putrid air of smoke-filled bars and busy streets suffocated him just as the plague had. So, before he could properly think about it, he paid his way onto the first coal supply train to town-on-Gorkhon and turned up on Burakh’s doorstep unannounced, but more welcomed than he would have expected.
In which Daniil Dankovsky confronts his existential crisis in the comfort of the Burakh household, while flirting his way into Artemy’s bed. Other shenanigans ensue

Summary
The Bachelor—man of science, child of the capital—has no ritual in him. No way to excise the growing tumor in his heart. Artemy should have seen it building. Expected something drastic. No ritual, but he doesn’t lack for drama.
“Oynon.” Artemy reaches for him. The Bachelor finally looks up.
(the Bachelor has realized that this is all a farce. the Haruspex helps him through it.)

Summary
"I came," Burakh says, eyes bright and honest as they meet Daniil's, "because you asked."
Intense, Daniil thinks, unbidden—his piercing gaze, his rumbling voice. As if he doesn't know how to be any other way.
"And," Daniil drawls as he steps forward, suddenly emboldened, "does a Warden of the Kin go wherever he's beckoned?"
"No. But a surgeon might, for a colleague." Straightforward, simple, with little hesitation. Burakh looks at Daniil as he moves closer, but doesn't pull away. Then Burakh falters—a rare sight, in the time Daniil's known him—before he continues, quieter than before. "Or a man might, for a friend."
On Day 12, on the cusp of his defeat, the Bachelor asks for one final favor.
