Summary
After giving up his golden core, Wei Wuxian barely makes it out alive. By the time he leaves the Wen sibblings, the war is almost over and he cannot help but feel useless. Not wanting his brother to know the truth, he decides to leave and settles in a small town where he starts working in an inn until one day, Wen Qing knocks on his door begging for help. Thus the Zaotou inn becomes a safe haven for captured Wens and Wei Wuxian alike.
One year later, little A-Yuan bumps into a person in white hanfu and Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan meet again. This time, Lan Zhan will not let Wei Wuxian slip between his fingers.

His brain was muddled with panic, the only coherent thought being run, run, run, get away! as he tried to put as much distance between him and what— who— was following him as possible. No one was supposed to see him leave. He thought he had been careful!
He could hear the sound of big paws hammering the ground coming from behind him; his pursuer was steadily gaining on him. He chanced a quick glance over his shoulder only for his throat to seize up in panic when he saw how close the big grey wolf chasing him had gotten already.
He urged his own paws to work impossibly harder, faster, to get him away, but he had already been pushing his limits before. It already felt like the muscles of his limbs were being torn open because of the work they were being put through.
And then he stumbled.

Lan Xichen’s eyes and mouth opened wide in astonishment, blinking several times. His regular peaceful expression crumbled, a hint of frustration in his face.
“I-”
“What?” Asked Wei Wuxian, puzzled.
He frowned, pursing his lips.
“I will let you think that one yourself…” He finally said, taking the wine from Wei Wuxian’s side and pouring some for himself.
Wei Wuxian had only seen him drink once. He wondered what had triggered the sudden need to drink in him.

Lan Zhan couldn’t have given it any less thought.
“Yes,” he breathes out, almost immediately. “Yes, Wei Ying, if you’d like me to stay—if you want me, here. I will—I can. I will stay.”
It’d been so easy, Wei Ying has to deliberately hide his shock.
Or, Lan Zhan asks Wei Ying to return to Gusu with him. Wei Ying gets him to stay in Burial Mounds instead.
