Ariana, who was currently watching her with the brightest, most dangerous kind of glee, as if Cynthia’s immense discomfort were her favorite entertainment. Ariana, who had suggested the game so casually, like tossing a match at a dry field, and who was now entirely too pleased with herself that Cynthia had been foolish enough to play along. To egg her on, even!
Yes, Cynthia thought, she regretted this.
Not her stubbornness. Not the opportunities she had turned down. Not the breakups, the sacrifices, the grit it had taken to carve out a place for herself. None of those merited the word.
But this challenge? This silly little bet she had let herself be talked into?
This, unfortunately, she was coming to regret very much indeed.

Morrible unfurls Glinda’s mind like a scroll, examining the contents of her memory the way she examined the displayed organs of the first fetal pig she ever dissected. It’s less cohesive than the innards of a pig. That’s the problem with memory bound by emotion. Love is diffuse. It so easily becomes entangled in every aspect of the human experience, regardless of whether the target was physically present or not. Extracting it with any amount of elegance can get…dicey.
