Bilbo did not mean to snap at Gandalf in front of the Company, did not mean to reveal such things. He almost never spoke of his parents or their demise, and here he had just blamed Gandalf for it in front of all of them. And he knew his friends far too well to think they'd drop it.

Summary
Though not well known outside of the Shire, it has long since been the case that Hobbits cannot survive the loss of their soulmates once they choose to let the bond form, their grief Withering them away only days or weeks after their other half dies. Most Shire-folk refuse to take the risk, finding love elsewhere, but if this quest has proven anything, it's that Bilbo is not like most Shire-folk.
The battle is over, and Thorin is not dead. Bilbo seems to be Withering anyway.

Óin can't help but chuckle when he enters the healing halls to find Bilbo asleep next to Thorin. It's hardly the first time their Hobbit has found his way to Thorin's side since they moved from the battlefield to the mountain, supporting his One as Thorin slumbered on.
It was not the first time he'd found Bilbo sleeping by Thorin's side.
It was the first time Bilbo didn't wake.

Bilbo has not caught something since he was a lad and accidentally caught the flower that Bertie Proudfoot was tossing to see if anyone was interested in her. It had taken a lot of practice and restraint but he was quite proud of the fact that he no longer flinched when someone threw something at him. For even that sort of reaction meant something to the hobbit tossing their heart. And while he’d always been careful to never throw anything that someone might be able to catch, he couldn’t have prepared himself for their quest.

Summary
Bilbo is quite convinced that all the problems plaguing them in the mountain - specifically, Thorin acting quite unlike himself - stem from the blasted Arkenstone. The thing is probably cursed, and it's up to him to get it as far away from Thorin as he can - and while he's at it, he might as well try to stop a war before it starts.
Rather than offering Bard and Thranduil the Arkenstone, Bilbo offers to give them his share of the treasure if they will please go away. Unfortunately, neither of them is willing to believe Thorin will hand it over - which leads to a ransom plan that is, in Bilbo's opinion, quite ridiculous and doomed to fail from the start. But at least that blasted stone is out of the mountain.
