Summary
An old Dwarven ritual demands a new king perform a fertility rite to ensure a prosperous reign, especially in times of hardship. Much to Thorin's chagrin, his Council addresses this issue. But nobody wants to answer the king's official request to perform the ritual with him. This apparent lack of loyalty enrages Bilbo, and he openly promises his aid to Thorin – even though he has no idea what kind of ritual we're speaking about. When somebody explains it to him, the Hobbit is mortified, but will steadfastly stand by his given word.

Summary
Bilbo is an only child. He has never fallen in love, he has never made any particularly close friends, and most of his family still thinks he spends too much time in the woods to be worthy of the Baggins name. Even now, he is the only hobbit in a fellowship full of dwarves he can’t quite make heads nor tails of.
Fortunately, the dwarves also do not know what it means to be a Baggins; they only know what it means to be a Company. And, perhaps, that is exactly the thing they need to be.
