Summary
It makes him sad, sometimes, that in order to find acceptance, Klaus has to travel back fifty years into one of the bloodiest wars of American history. Most of the time, he doesn't care. His family probably doesn't even notice he's missing anyway.
---
Dave is looking at him, eyes soft and heavy lidded. “What did you say to that guy?” he asks, head resting on the wall, body turned towards Klaus.
“Ah,” Klaus laughs, dropping his hand to take a drink. “Just mouthed off. You know how I am.”
“That mouth will get you in trouble some day,” Dave says softly.
Klaus looks up, swallowing. “Some people like my mouth,” he says.
“I do.”

“Hey fellas,” Klaus calls as the battered, bullet-dented jeep rolls to a stop in front of the checkpoint. His dog tags are strung between his fingers and he holds them out towards the two men.
“Holy shit,” One of the men says. “Hargreeves?”
“You remember me?” Klaus grins, putting a hand over his heart. “I’m touched.”
Both of the soldiers lower their weapons and straighten, still looking incredulous. “I can’t believe you’re still alive,” one says, grabbing Klaus’ arm to help him stumble out of the jeep.
He wraps his arm around the soldier’s neck, limping towards the camp. “While I would say oh ye of little faith, I don’t want anyone to raise their expectations of me.”
“Man,” he sighs, shaking his head. “Bet you’ve got some stories to tell.”
Klaus flashes another smile. “You wouldn’t believe half of it.”
...
It feels too good to be true. Dave closes his eyes, still grinning as he thinks about the way Klaus looked sitting in the ward tend. He was a bloody mess, and somehow, had never looked more beautiful. Questions about what exactly had happened are swirling around in his mind, but Dave knows that he likely won’t get answers for a while. Klaus deserves a moment's rest, anyway.
As the night grows longer, more and more people start to filter in, shooting confused looks at Dave. His grin is out of character for his behavior the past few days, and it doesn’t take long until everyone figures out why he’s in such a good mood.
“Goddamn,” he hears somebody mutter. “I don’t even think God could kill that guy. Must be the luckiest sonofabitch on the planet.”
To himself, Dave thinks that it isn’t Klaus who’s the lucky one, but himself.
