Chapter 1: Awakening

Chapter Text

The trip to Egypt was originally been to aide a pack in Cairo whose alpha had been a friend of their mother’s.

It turns out that they had needed help driving a sphinx out of their territory.

However, Cora didn't want to go home without seeing the ancient pyramids so they decided to make a day trip of it.

Of course, it didn't go as planned.

---

Derek looked around the inside of the pyramid as Cora listened actively to the tour guide who was saying something about how the pharos was embalmed and buried.

Something didn't feel right, it made his wolf itch but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Suddenly he finds himself drawn to a hieroglyph of something that looked like a scorpion.. man? It's as if the world has vanished around him and this painting.

"Derek," he jumps and turns to find Cora standing there.

"The tour is over, what are you still doing here?"

"What?" Derek asks puzzled, "how can it be over already I was standing here for a minute,"

"Derek it's been an hour." Derek feels a tingle go up his spine and turns back towards the painting.

Nothing has changed by he reaches out to touch it. He hisses as his fingertip pricks a piece of sharp cracked stone. Both he and Cora watch as the blood seeps into the wall as if absorbed by a sponge. Just then, the pyramid begins shaking, they reach out for anything to steady themselves on.

Suddenly the wall explodes, pelting the two wolves with rubble. When the dust clears they look up to find a body in the wall, though instead of it being decayed, it looks as if he is still alive. The figure’s head rises to reveal bright purple eyes with slitted pupils. He leaps from the wall and both wolves watch as a tail extends itself from his back and two large spikes extended from his forearm. Derek ducks as one such spike is slashed at him.

He hears Cora let out a growl and lunge at the... creature only to have its tail swipe her aside as if she is a doll. Derek yelps as the figure jumps over him, flipping in the air, and lands in his shoulders, its tail coils under his arm, its stinger just barely digging into his throat. It says something in a language he doesn't understand. "I...I don't speak your language,"

The creature hisses before leaning down. Derek grunts as he feels fangs bury into his neck. When they retreat he hears the creature speak again, though this time he understands it perfectly.

"Who are you?"

"I...I'm Derek," the wolf stammers.

"Why have you trespassed into the great pharo’s tomb?"

"We..we were on a tour?" He can smell the confusion from the thing. The creature hops off his back and looks around.

"How many years have passed?"

"What?..what is the last thing you remember?" Derek asks.

"Pharoh Akhenaten had just been buried, and I was assigned to guard his tomb," silence passes for a moment before Cora gasps.

"Derek, Akhenaten ruled Egypt during 1351.. over a thousand years ago," Derek feels himself freeze.

"Oh fuck"

---

They manage to sneak the confused yet also amazed creature out of the tomb after having him retract his tail and arm spikes.

They take him back to their hotel which is another thing that amazes him. However, before he can ask any questions Derek sits him down and steps into his alpha role.

“So what are you?” Derek questions.

The thing looks between the wolves for a moment before answering.

“I'm an aqrabuamelu,”

Derek looks to Cora who only shakes her head.

“I'm a were-scorpion I guess you could call it,” the man says.

“And what were you doing in the pyramid?” Derek asks.

“I was protecting it, from intruders, robbers, thieves,”

“Is that why you were in the wall?” Cora asks

“You were the hieroglyph,” Derek suddenly cuts in.

The scorpion turns to him and nods.

“Glyphs of scorpions and my people are painted in tombs to guard and escort the dead into the afterlife.”

Derek nods at this and turns to Cora.

“What’s your name?”

“Bahadur,” he replies immediately.

“But you may call me Stiles, it's...a nickname I was given,”

“By who?”

“Akhenaten..or his soul more like, said that while Bahadur was a good strong name Stiles seemed to fit me more,”

Derek nods.

“I'm Derek, and this is my sister, Cora, I'm the alpha of Beacon Hills...it's a place in California...which is a place in America….”

Stiles cuts him off with a raised hand and a smile.

“You don't have to explain to me, I already assumed that based on my great lack of knowledge about the world currently your home would be somewhere I am not familiar with,”

Derek holds his gaze for a moment and nods.

“So what do we do now?” Cora questions.

“We buy another ticket home and take him with us,”

Stiles watches as the two talk amongst themselves.

Finally, they come to an agreement.

“I take it your kind don't exactly operate in packs.”

Stiles shakes his head.

“No, we protect the soul of the one lain before us alone.”

Derek nods.

“How would you feel about joining my pack?”

Stiles considers this for a moment and nods before falling to one knee and bowing his head.

“I pledge my service to you Alpha.”

Cora takes this moment to speak.

“How are we going to explain to mom that we have a thousand-year-old were-scorpion coming back home with us?”

Derek says nothing for a moment.

“We’ll figure it out,” he says. “If anything, Mom will know what to do,”

---

Derek taps his foot in anticipation as he thinks about the possible ways that this could go wrong, luckily for him and Cora, the family friend in Egypt who they were helping was willing to help them get proper paperwork for...Stiles...Derek remembered the name the creature had supplied. Now they sit on the plane, Cora and Derek sandwiching him in between the two wolves. Every once in a while the flight attendant will pass by and give them an odd look before continuing on his way.

Arriving back in America, Derek immediately books it for the camaro, leaving Cora to collect the bags and watch over Stiles. Pulling up in front of the doors, Derek helps them load the luggage into the trunk of the car before quickly driving away.

“Text mom, and tell her that we are bringing company,” Derek tells Cora before glancing into the rearview mirror to find Stiles looking out the window.

Arriving back at the Hale house, Derek leads Stiles up the stairs of the porch, declaring that they can get the luggage later.

“Now my mom is an alpha werewolf...you will show her respect,”

“You have my word,” Stiles says with a nod.

Glancing at Cora, Derek sags when his sister shrugs.

Taking a breath, he opens the door and guides Stiles inside.

They find the rest of their pack gathered in the living room.

“Mom, Dad,” Derek begins. “This is Stiles...we kind of...need your help,” Derek watches as his mother turns her gaze to Stiles and studies him for a moment before glancing at Peter, his uncle stares back at and together they have a silent conversation.

Finally, his mother nods and turns back to them with a smile. “So, Stiles...would you care to share with us what exactly you are?”

Stiles glances at Derek who nods before taking a breath, stepping forward, he shrugs his shoulders before flicking his arms out,

Everyone watches as long spikes extend from his forearms past his knuckles while a tail lashes out from behind him before flicking this and that way, reminding Derek somewhat of a cat. Even without seeing them, Derek knows that Stiles’ eyes are glowing purple.

The effect is immediate, the rest of the pack gapes at Stiles who moves to stand next to Derek.

“What...what are you?” Talia asks.

“I'm an Aqrabuamelu, a half scorpion,”

Peter now glances at Derek, and you found him in Egypt?”

Derek nods. “Why do you ask?”

“His kind normally come from Mesopotamia,”

“That is partially true,” Stiles smiles. “There were however some of us who were blessed by the goddess Serqet, we were assigned to guard the tombs of pharos and act as guides for their souls in the afterlife.”

Peter studies him for a moment before nodding.

“So how did you come across my children?”

“They, awakened me from a hieroglyph” Stiles answers simply, causing everyone in the room to flinch.

After a moment Talia nods with a sigh. “Well then, we are not a pack that is set in their ways to only have wolves,” she says. “We would be glad to have you join us,”

Stiles nods with his own smile. “It would be my honor,” he bows.

The room falls silent as everyone watches Talia approach Stiles before placing her hands on his shoulders and gently pushing him to his knees. She stares down at him for a moment before flashing his eyes.

Derek hums as he feels the pack bond snap into place.

Talia helps Stiles to his feet. “Welcome to the pack,” he says before glancing to Derek. “Der, would it be ok if he roomed with you? We don't exactly have another open room,”

Derek glances at Stiles before nodding. “Sure, we can go out tomorrow and get another bed,”

Talia nods and allows her son to lead the newest member of the pack up the stairs.

Once in the room, Derek lets out a sigh. You can take the bed for tonight, lord knows when the last time you actually slept in a bed,” he smiles.

Stiles smiles and sits down on the mattress, running his hand over the fabric of the sheets he hums. “Thank you...for all of this,” he says. “I know that is different, having something like me under the same roof, but I promise...I will be loyal to you and your family,”

Derek says nothing for a moment before nodding. “I know you will...you’re a good person, I just met you but even I can tell that,” he says before leaving the room to go and grab the bags from the car.

“I just have to teach a guy from ancient Egypt everything about the twenty-first century,” Derek scoffs quietly to himself. “Should be easy,” he sighs.
