What’s going on?, Eda groggily thought as she got up from her nest. It was the night after the race and her head was pounding with a massive headache. Eda stumbled as she walked to her dresser from the pain of it.
Did I have some Apple Blood? It must have been good to produce this much of a hangover, Eda thought as she drank her elixir.
The powerless witch dragged herself down the stairs to go to the kitchen. She resolved to get coffee to deal with her pounding headache. And to get more Apple Blood to deal with whatever crazy stuff happens today, Eda agreed.
Unfortunately for Eda’s plan, she was stopped by Luz blocking her way to the kitchen.
“Hey Eda, could we talk about something?”, she said sheepishly.
Eda groaned, “Fine kid, we'll talk.”
“YES!”
“After some coffee first”
“Still yes!”, Luz said as she raced into the living room.
As Eda made her coffee, she wondered what Luz wanted to talk about. Did she figure something out about the portal?, that is what Eda hoped it was, but the realization then struck her.
Oh no I did something while drunk again, Eda bemoaned mentally. To the inhabitants of the Owl House, Eda was known for drinking lots of Apple Blood which caused some weird scenarios. For example, ending up on the roof in the middle of the night.
Eda drank her coffee quickly and walked to the living room quickly as she panicked.
What did I do? What did I do? What did I do? WHAT DID I DO?
Eda was in panic as she sat down on the couch besides Luz who seemed worried.
Oh no, I definitely did something.
Eda decided, for her own sake, to get this over with quickly and apologize to Luz and the others.
“Look, whatever I did kid, I’m sorry alright.” Eda said with sadness and guilt over something she thought she had done.
Luz responded quickly as she put her hands in front of her to try to calm Eda. “Oh I didn’t make you upset, did I? Man, I did. You didn’t do anything wrong Eda!,” she frantically stated.
Eda's eyes widened at the panic she sent Luz into and then looked down in her lap out of shame. She hated seeing Luz all worried like this.
Eda tried to regain her cool demeanor as she spoke, “So what is this about? You don’t know I don't have all day, kid.”
After Eda’s response, Luz gained a somber look in her eyes, “Well something happened last night. You said something that concerned me and I wanted to help.”, Luz said with a hopeful smile.
Eda started to panic again. Eda could have said many things that could have concerned Luz. But what did I say to get Luz concerned like this?, Eda wondered as she sat there.
“You said something about a bard witch called… Raine? I think?” Luz said as she tried to remember details of what Eda said last night. Eda’s mind flashed to yesterday. Raine, after so many years, comes back into her life and leaves her a mess. Well, I already was a mess but that didn’t help, she thought grimly. Luz then almost jumped up as she remembered what Eda said.
“OH, yousaidthattheyrecruitedyouforsomethingandtheygotkidnappedbycovenheads!”, Luz said in a rush. Eda flinched from how fast Luz spoke. “Calm down, kid. You’ll give me a heart attack one day. Tell me what you want to know.”, she calmly said.
Luz took a second to organize her thoughts. “Well, I want to know who this “Raine” is, you didn’t say much other than they were a really good bard and that they got captured by coven heads.” Luz said as she questioned Eda. “And I really would like to know how they know you and how we can rescue them!” as she got in Eda’s face.
Eda laughed, “Kid, you won’t ever give finding out my “mysterious backstory” a rest, won’t you?”
“Never, so please please please tell me about Raine!”
Eda's mind stopped. What am I supposed to say, she thought. Eda’s mind went back to all the memories she and Raine shared together. Meeting Raine through being caught watching her bard class through the school’s secret doors, spending time at school together, just lying on that hill playing music together, Raine leaving her like everyone else did, and finally, Raine coming back into her life and destroying her all over again.
Eda laughed somberly to herself, Raine sure did leave a number on me. “Well Raine was a bard I knew back from my school days and we…,” she paused trying to decide whether to reveal their romantic history to Luz. After a moment, Eda decided that would be a conversation for later. “...knew each other for a long time and then they joined the bard coven. And we…”, she paused again remembering how hurt, but not surprised, she was after Raine broke up with her. Everyone left me eventually because of the curse, Eda remembered.
“...didn’t see each other for many years until Raine became the head of the bard coven who was also leading a rebellion. I volunteered to help them and things went well for a little while, and then we got led into a trap, the rest of our goop disappeared into abomination goop by a coven head and TWO COVEN LEADERS CAPTURED RAINE!” Eda yelled as she got more emotional.
Luz was stunned about this. She had rarely seen Eda so emotional except for when she got captured by the Emperor’s Coven. Luz resolved to herself that she had to fix this and make Eda happy again. And maybe find a little more about Eda and Raine’s history as it’s obvious something is there, she thought.
“Well, how can I help?” Luz asked.
Eda chuckled grimly. What could they even do anyway? Raine and the others are probably in prison or worse and Eda is nowhere near as powerful as she used to be to be able to get them out.
“Do you think you could successfully launch a prison break?”
A voice that was not Luz’s suddenly spoke, “A prison break you say? I am intrigued.” Luz and Eda looked over to King who had just woken up. “Whatever you two are planning, “ he pointed to both Luz and Eda, “I’m IN!”
King then jumped onto the couch and leaped into Eda’s lap to point into her face. “WHY ARE YOU TWO PLANNING A PRISON ESCAPE WITHOUT ME?”, he yelled. “I thought we were family”, he said as Eda remembered King now having her last name. I guess we are kinda family now, she thought fondly.
Eda then raised King off of her lap and sat him beside her on the couch. “Well, we just started planning a prison break and we didn’t want to wake you up, alright?”, Eda said with a bright smile. King grumbled, “Alright, you have my forgiveness.” Luz then shouted, “So we’re planning a prison break for Eda to rescue your friend, right?!:”
Eda smiled at her energy. “Yes, we are.”, she said, full of fondness for both her and King. King then pointed to Luz. “Now tell me the details of this “prison break” of ours!”, he ordered. Luz immediately started rambling on about everything Eda had said about Raine while King looked attentively as Eda stared at them both.
Who ever thought someone could get so excited about a prison break, she thought. They cared so much for her. A long time ago, she would have pushed them away to protect them from the curse, but now after everything, she would only hold them closer.
