Work Text:
Wilbur smiled down at the blonde bundled in his arms. Fast asleep and right where he belongs.
Not with those filthy humans. Who beat him. And mocked him. And called him a monster and an abomination and-
Wilbur takes a deep breath.
It’s okay now. They’re gone. Never to lay a single finger on his sunshine’s head again.
He hums. He hums the song he sung to him when he was born.
“Baby mine
Don’t you cry
Baby mine
Dry your eyes
Rest your head
Close to my heart
Never to part
Baby of mine
Little one
When you play
Don’t you mind
What they say
Let those eyes
Sparkle and shine
Never a tear
Baby of mine”
Wilbur reached a cabin. Same place, same look, like it had never been burnt down.
This was the home he wanted to raise Tommy in. And it’s the one he will rebuild his son’s broken mind.
Where he will pour love into him. Letting it flow out of him and fill Tommy up until it’s over flowing.
Wilbur pushes the door open and closed it softly behind him. He glided over to Tommy’s room, over to his bed. He gently pulled the blankets back and slipped inside. Pulling it over them and tucking it under Tommy’s back and shoulders.
And there he laid.
Listening to the soft breaths from his son.
His own little puffs of warmth and life he’s pushing into the world.
Wilbur didn’t think it was possible for something usually so small and mundane to be so precious.
His son’s breaths.
He looks at Tommy’s sleeping form.
Tiny twitches of his fingers. Tiny twitches of his nose. Eyes moving under his eye lids. Slight curls of his lips before he snuggles further into his chest.
He gently placed his nose in sunshine curls. Taking a few breaths of his own.
He remembers Tommy’s scent.
It’s warm and light. Something magical just gleaming underneath the surface that begs for freedom. To drift through the room and mark everything with just a little bit more whimsy.
He despises that it’s weighed down by blood.
He hopes he never has to smell Tommy’s blood again.
He feels Tommy’s fingers dig into his clothes.
Scrunching the fabric up between fingers still so small. Wilbur slips his bigger hand around his tiny one.
After all this time, it still fits perfectly.
Wilbur places his other hand on Tommy’s head.
Slipping it under his chin. Feeling Tommy’s hairs tickle his neck. Brushing softly against the skin.
Everything about him is so light.
Like he’s holding sunshine itself. A single dark moment able to shatter it.
Wilbur cups it close to his chest. Hiding it from view.
Nobody will take his precious sunshine away from him again.
He promises to hold it closer. To hold it gentler. To hold it ever more precious. To shield it from the darkness of the world until it’s ready to destroy it. To glow so brightly it washes it all away.
Until then he tucks it beneath his chin. Curls his being around it. Whispers promises that shall never be broken.
Promises to protect. To hold. To care.
To love forever.
To make laugh again.
Oh to make laugh again.
Wilbur felt all his senses buzzing with a comfortable and long awaited warmth.
How honored he is to be allowed so near.
Sunshine has entrusted itself to him. To keep it safe in his arms.
He will not break this act of trust. He will not let his sunshine be consumed by the darkness.
His sunshine. Forever safe. Forever loved. And forever his.
————————————————————————————
Tommy awoke to soft kisses pressed into his hair.
Delicate enough to not shatter this warm blanket of sleep.
He blinks his eyes open slowly and for a moment is entranced by brown and gold. Gold that gleams like his own. Sparkling as the light hits it perfectly.
Or maybe... not the light of the room.
It’s sparkling with something inside. Gleaming with adoration and shining down on him. Curling love around his mind as for a moment, two souls are locked. Both entranced by the other. The only thing the other sees.
Then he blinks and the warmth stays, this time from a warm smile and another kiss to his forehead.
“Good morning sunshine.” His father whispers.
Tommy doesn’t understand how so much love can be spilled from a few words. But his father somehow manages it.
Tommy smiles sleepily, “Hi dad.”
Wilbur’s smile only grows softer and his eyes grow wet. A shallow breath leaving him, like Tommy is some wonder to be awed at.
“Hi baby.”
Fingers brush softly under his eyes and he’s only just realizing he’s crying.
“Shh shh shhhh...” His father melodically hushes, “Daddy’s here now.”
Tommy doesn’t know why he’s crying. There’s just... warmth.
So much warmth.
It’s comfortable but overwhelming. Yet all his senses are wrapped in blankets and tucked under an ocean of care. Falling only deeper and deeper until it’s all he can breath.
It’s suffocating yet his chest has never felt more free to breath.
Thumbs brush under his eyes again, “Darling...”
“D-dad.”
A current pulls him further under. Begging him to just sleep once more.
“You can sleep, love. Sleep all you need. I’ll be right here.” His father says, as if he was reading his mind.
Tommy lets the ocean take him.
————————————————————————————
The next time Tommy wakes up his senses are less weighed down. Still wrapped nicely but not suffocatingly so.
Then there’s a whisper in the back of his mind.
‘Abomination’ it says.
‘Undeserving’ it says.
Tommy covers his ears and whines.
He’s loved. He’s loved.
‘No right to be’ it says.
Then fingers curl beneath his chin and his face is lifted up.
“Look at me Toms.”
Tommy whines again but opens his eyes. He’s met with swirling brown.
His hands are taken away from his ears one at a time, him staring all the while.
“You’re hurting yourself.” Wilbur mumbles in a way that showed nothing but concern.
Tommy lets his hands fall to his side.
“What’s the matter? What’s wrong?”
Tommy buries his face into the pillow, “I don’t... Do I?”
“Do you what?”
“Deserve... this. I don’t-“
“No need to finish that thought, dear. Why wouldn’t you deserve this?”
“Because I’m... I’m not supposed to exist. Fae and human... I’m a monstrosity.”
Wilbur hummed, sounding rather dangerous and Tommy couldn’t help but shake slightly.
“Are you saying what I helped create doesn’t deserve to be loved? Something of my likeness is too hideous to be cared for?”
“That’s not-“
“Are you saying that what me and the love of my life created, a perfect combination of both of us, is anything but perfect? Are you saying that every bit of good we are amounts to something unlovable? Are you saying my most prized creation, the thing I am the most proud of, is worthless?”
“I didn’t mean it tha-“
“Because I find that rather insulting. So Tommy, tell me... Are you worthy of love?”
Tommy opened and closed his mouth a few times, face turning slightly red.
Wilbur simply stared at him expectantly.
Tommy tucked his chin to his chest and looked away as he gave a small nod. Fingers curled under his chin and he was turned to face Wilbur once more. His face stern but not uncaring.
“Say it for me.”
“I’m...” Tommy took a shuddering breath, “I’m worthy of love.”
Wilbur’s features softened and he pressed another quick kiss to his forehead, “Good job sunshine. We’re going to say that everyday. Until it’s never questioned again.”
Tommy felt his face heat up.
“It’ll take some time. For those thoughts to go away. But Tommy I’m going to be here. Everyday. Every moment you need me. Anytime you hear that voice, you say my name. I’ll tell you you’re worth it until that voice disappears.”
Tommy nodded.
“Are you hearing it now?”
Tommy looked away for a second and shrugged, “A little bit I... I don’t believe it. Or I don’t think I do.”
“Good. Because guess what?”
Tommy looked into Wilbur’s excited eyes, “What?”
Wilbur leaned in close, whispering like he was telling a secret as his voice got slightly higher, “I love you.”
Tommy chuckled slightly and Wilbur beamed. The sound bouncing in his ear then to his brain. He wants to hear it again. For it to not be a memory but a fact of the moment. He wants that laughter in his ears all the time.
He watched the way Tommy’s face curved, the way his shoulders bounced with the chuckle.
“So much of you reminds me of your mother.” Wilbur says.
Tommy’s smile faded slightly to a frown. Wilbur gave a sad smile and brushed his knuckles softly over Tommy’s cheek.
Then Tommy whispered, “What do... what do we have in common?”
Wilbur smiled and pulled them to sitting up. Letting Tommy snuggle into his side as he rested his back against the headboard, brushing his fingers through Tommy’s hair.
“Well. You have her eyes.” Wilbur said, “And you have her nose.” Wilbur then turned to face him, booping his nose and making him giggle.
“You have her face. And her smile.” Wilbur said as he playfully pulled Tommy’s face into a smile.
Tommy giggled and tried to smack his hands away. Wilbur only grinned and squished his cheeks further until Tommy’s eyes were practically shut.
“You have her dimple. And your face moves the same way when you laugh. Oh oh! And your hair is silky like her’s.” He said as he ran his hand through it.
Tommy smiled and snuggled into his father’s side, silence falling on them again. Fingers scratching gently at his scalp.
“What was she like?” Tommy asked.
Wilbur hummed, “She was kind.”
Tommy squeezed him tighter.
“She found a way to love something everyday. Even small things. Bugs crawling along he ground. A pretty rock. She said there was beauty in everything. She was careful around me at first, fae don’t exactly have the best record. But she quickly set that aside. She was trusting of me. She was wise. She loved the stars. She would point out constellations to me and we’d make our own. We were married under the stars you know?”
“I like the stars too.” Tommy said distantly.
“Oh? We can go see some tonight. If you’d like.”
“That sounds nice. What did she... She think about me?”
Wilbur chuckled, “Of all the things she loved the most, found the most beauty in, it was you. I was second place. By a lot.”
Tommy chuckled wetly.
“She always thought you were the best of both of us. She was wonderful.” Wilbur choked.
“I wish I could have met her... now.”
Wilbur hummed wetly, “She would love you just the same now as she did then.”
“You really think so?”
“I know so.”
Tommy hummed and buried his face into Wilbur’s chest, “I think... I have a lot of good qualities from you too.”
Wilbur can hear his voice crack, like it’s incredibly hard for him to say.
Wilbur understands. Tommy has been told his fae features are ugly. Told him it’s what makes him deserving of all the terrible things he was given.
Wilbur smiled and picked Tommy up, pulling him onto his lap and having Tommy face him, “I think... You’re Thomas Soot. A wonderful and individual being. You’re beautiful because you’re you, just as much as because you’re our son. Never forget, you’re beautiful because you’re you.”
Tommy wondered what he did to deserve this. To deserve such kind words and such a loving father.
“Wilbur.” Tommy says and Wilbur tilts his head.
“What’s troubling your mind?”
“Why do I deserve you?”
Wilbur smiled and chuckled lightly, “Every child deserves to be loved, little one. Every child. And I get the honor of loving you. I thank your mother for such a wonderful gift.”
Tommy’s lips wobbled between a frown and a smile as he tried not to cry.
Wilbur scooped him up and stood up, “Let’s get you something to eat. My little sunshine.”
————————————————————————————
Wilbur grew some apples. Picking Tommy up and allowing him to pick them from the tree.
Tommy bit into one, the juice trailing down his chin as he melted at the taste. Wilbur chuckling.
“Are they good, my darling?”
“Wonderful.” Tommy said simply as he started eating the apple faster.
“Slow down.” Wilbur said with a smile.
Tommy immediately put the apple down, turning away and closing his eyes, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I-“
Wilbur felt his heart sting. He couldn’t even take the smallest scolding without being afraid.
What did they do to break him so?
“Shh Shh Love. It’s alright. I’m never going to hurt you.”
Tommy’s trembles slowed, “R-right. Right.” He confirmed to himself.
“I was only saying to slow down so you didn’t choke. I didn’t want you to get hurt.” Wilbur explained.
Tommy nodded and picked the apple up. Wilbur tried to ignore how much pain it caused him to see Tommy’s fingers were still trembling.
He just wanted to end his son’s suffering.
No more flinching. No more fear. No more ribs poking out of his skin.
He knows it requires patience but... It still hurts.
Tommy finished the apple and could eat no more. Wilbur smiling at him.
“You did good sunshine.”
“I ate?”
“You did. And you should continue to do so. I can grow many different things. We’ll try to ensure you can eat more than just a single apple.”
“Oh.” Tommy said, unsure how much more he could make his stomach fit.
Wilbur laid a hand on his shoulder and smiled warmly, “We’ll get there.”
————————————————————————————
And so their days went.
Everyday, morning and night, Tommy looked Wilbur in the eyes and told himself he was worth love. And every time, Wilbur would kiss his head and tell him he loved him. That he was proud.
Every night they went to see the stars. Laying out in the grass and pointing to the sky.
Tommy talked about how the stars were his constant.
The thing he found beauty in.
Wilbur tried to hide his tears but failed when he scooped Tommy up and tears soaked into both their clothes.
Afterwards they made their own constellations.
Wilbur marking them all down to find again later.
He pointed out ones Tommy’s mother had shown him. Flowers and bugs. Food and random shapes.
Together they mapped the entire sky in overlapping shapes. Everywhere in the night sky marked by their delicate fingers. That way every time they looked up, they’d see each other. Making artwork of a sky they laid claim to.
Tommy would wonder if one day they’d touch the stars. Wilbur promised to do everything in his power to bring a star down to him.
Though he already had his perfect little star in his arms.
They played in the stream. Wilbur told the story of how he and Sally met. How they stood on this vary rock and said their vows.
Then Wilbur would pull Tommy into the stream. Kicking water into his face as Tommy did the same.
Shrieking laughter filled the air.
And for once, Tommy’s mind was quiet. No voices telling him he didn’t deserve this.
Just him and his father in a war of who could get the other most soaked.
In the end it wouldn’t really matter. They’d both be soaked to the core.
But at that moment, they played. They laughed. And they forgot all their troubles.
————————————————————————————
Of course someone had to go and interrupt that. Because Wilbur can’t seem to have nice things.
It started as a knock on the door.
The chatting in the house died. Wilbur’s expression grew dim and threatening.
“Thomas. Stay behind me.”
Tommy walked behind Wilbur. Wilbur’s fists flexing and unflexing. A magic glow coming from his hands as he prepared to rip apart anyone who dare approach his sunlight.
“Mate?” A voice echoed from behind the door.
Wilbur blinked.
“Phil. He might not even be here. Since when did Wilbur live in a cabin?”
Wilbur looked back at Tommy who wore a confused expression. Wilbur felt anger rise in him.
He won’t let anything happen.
Tommy is still so fragile.
“Yeah, Techno, you’re right...” Phil’s voice sighed.
Suddenly Wilbur threw the door open. Meeting the faces of two men.
One with large black wings and shoulder length blonde hair. The other with pink hair and tusks. A strange and powerful aura radiating off of them.
“Wil!” Phil greeted excitedly.
“Phil. Techno.” Wilbur dipped his head to the two.
“You’ve been silent for quite a few years, mate. What’s up?” Phil questioned.
“Sorry. I’ve been... distracted. Listen I’m okay, clearly and-“
“Wil.” Techno said lowly, making Wilbur flinch, “There’s a child attached to your leg.”
Wilbur looked down and sighed, “It appears there is.”
Phil beamed, “You didn’t tell me you had a kid!”
Phil bent down. Tommy looking at him with a hint of fear but mostly curiosity. Staying tucked behind Wilbur’s legs.
Phil then froze, “You’re...” He titled his head and his brows furrowed, “Not... fae? But you are...” Phil’s eyes widened and he stood up, “Human-“
Wilbur snarled and stepped in front of Tommy, magic swirling around his hands, “Careful what your next words are.”
“Wil. That kid is half human. That’s not-“ Techno started but was quickly wrapped in a vine.
“I said. Watch your next words carefully.”
Silence fell on them for a moment before Wilbur sighed. Turning around and bending down to Tommy’s level.
“Okay sweetheart. Go ahead and go inside. I want you to stay inside and don’t come out. Okay?”
Tommy nodded.
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
Wilbur smiled and ruffled his hair, “Alright lovely. I’ll be right back, I promise.”
Tommy scurried off back into the cabin and Wilbur shut the door softy.
He then whipped around to the two still stuck fae, a stern expression on his face as he started walking away from the cabin, “Come along.”
The two didn’t hesitate to march after him.
————————————————————————————
After a few minutes Wilbur stopped.
“We have some questions.” Techno said.
“I know.” Wilbur said simply, “Here is the information you need. And you’ll do good to listen well. I fell in love with a human.”
“Wilbur.” Phil hissed, “You gave her your name didn’t you?!”
“I said. LISTEN.” Wilbur hissed and Phil promptly shut his mouth.
“She was a lovely woman. And we gave each other our names. She was a good person. She was my best friend. And she gifted me that brilliant boy you just saw.”
Phil’s features softened slightly, “Was?”
Wilbur’s face saddened, “Was. Humans found out about our relationship and killed her. They also kidnapped my son.”
“Wil...” Techno started, surprisingly soft compared to his usual self.
“I lost him.” Wilbur said, not even registering the tears or shaking of his hands, “But I found him again. And he entrusted me to take care of him and take him away from the horrid abuse he was going through. They called him an abomination. They called my baby boy a monster.”
Wilbur’s lips quivered, “And the worst part is he believed it...”
Phil looked heart broken and quickly pulled Wilbur down into a hug. Wilbur bending down at an uncomfortable angle.
“He’s... he’s only recently getting better. He’s made a lot of progress and he rarely has days he doesn’t think he’s worthy of love anymore.”
Wilbur then shoved himself away from Phil, eyes red and puffy but magic swirled dangerously around him, “So if you so much as LOOK at him in disgust, if you say a single thing about how he’s something unnatural or wrong. Then I will not hesitate to kill both of you where you stand.”
The pair put their hands up.
“We won’t.” Phil promised.
Wilbur looked to Techno.
Techno nodded back, “Promise.”
Wilbur relaxed. The magic fading.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Phil asked softly, almost sounding hurt, “We could have helped you look for him.”
“Because fae and humans aren’t exactly bias free groups. Humans killed my wife. Fae could do much worse.”
“We wouldn’t hurt someone you had claimed. You know that.” Techno said.
“But I did not need you sticking your noses in my business. I did not want your side glances. And I certainly did not want this information to slip out into the fae community. Because other fae certainly do not care about my claims.” Wilbur huffed.
“I can understand. But Wilbur we will be careful. We shall only discuss this information in a secure environment. And we’re your friends. We will bring no harm to your son. If you wish us to leave we shall. However I would like to meet him, if you would allow me to.”
Wilbur sighed and ran a hand through his messy hair, “Very well. You may see him. I hold you to your promises.”
The duo nodded and they started their trip back to the cabin.
————————————————————————————
Wilbur knocked softly on the door, “Sunshine. I’m bringing in some friends of mine.”
“Okay!”
Wilbur pushes the door open to see Tommy sitting on the sofa. Blanket over his lap and book in hand.
Tommy’s eyes lit up when he saw Wilbur but he quickly shrunk in on himself when his eyes glazed over the other two.
Wilbur watched with wary eyes as Phil approached.
Bending down to eye level with Tommy.
“Hi mate.” Phil said softly, “What’s your name?”
Tommy eyed him warily, looking just like his father as he does so, “You can call me Tommy.”
Phil chuckled, “Smart boy. But I promise I will bring you no harm. You’re Wilbur’s child. I’d be a fool to try and take you away.”
Wilbur huffed his agreement.
“What’s your name?” Tommy asked with just the slightest upturn of his lips.
Phil chuckled, “Call me Phil.”
Tommy frowned, “I suppose you’re smart too.”
Phil gave a full on laugh, “I’d hope after all my years I wouldn’t fall for a child’s tricks.”
“Not a child!” Tommy roared.
Techno just stared at Tommy.
“Tommy.” Techno tested, “Tommy as in Thomas. As in...” He spun around to look at a smirking Wilbur.
“THAT’S WHY YOU WERE ASKING BABY NAMES!”
“WHAT!” Phil shouted, spinning around to the two.
Wilbur cackled as Techno groaned.
Wilbur remembers it very vividly.
He had walked to Phil’s home to visit them when he passed by Techno. Techno was sitting on a chair, leg propped up on his knee as he flipped through a book.
“Hey Tech.” Wilbur called.
Techno hummed, flipping through another page.
“What would be some good baby boy names?”
“Uhhhhh...” Techno glanced around the page, taking the first one that was there, “Theseus.”
It was silent for a few moments.
Then another flip of a page.
Wilbur sighed, “I knew this was a bad idea.” He mumbled before walking away.
Wilbur cackled at Techno’s jaw dropping.
Phil face palmed, rubbing the bridge of his nose, “He literally came to you, asked randomly about baby names and you didn’t pick up on the fact he just might have a reason for asking such a question?”
Techno shrugged over exaggeratedly, “I was readin’!”
Techno then spun around and looked at Tommy, pointing at him, “You’re Theseus.”
Tommy gave a raised brow, “No. I’m called Tommy.”
“No no. Your dad asked me to help name you. You are Theseus.”
“That’s not how this works-“ Wilbur started.
“It’s decided.” Techno huffs, “Also call me Techno.”
Tommy mumbled a, “Smart too...” before shutting his book with a snap and setting it down.
“Don’t fret Techno. Tommy’s name was still derived from Theseus.” Wilbur said with a grin.
“I am calling him Theseus.” Techno declared.
“Dad. Who are these people?” Tommy asked as he rushed up to Wilbur.
Wilbur chuckled and bent down, scooping the 13 year old up, “Some old friends of mine.”
Tommy leaned forward and whispered into Wilbur’s ear, “Do they know your name?”
Wilbur chuckled and pressed a kiss to his cheek, “Yes sunshine.”
Tommy hummed and buried his face in his father’s neck. Them both sighing contently.
The fae duo watched as the two simply stood contently. Eyes closed and breathing each other in.
“I’m happy for you.” Phil said with a small, genuine smile.
Wilbur smiled back, leaning his head on Tommy’s, “Thank you.”
He then turned and started tickling Tommy, “I’m very proud of him too!”
Tommy shrieked a laugh and the others couldn’t help but melt at the childish sound.
Wilbur is astounded that Tommy’s laugh hadn’t changed from that childish giggle. Not that he was complaining.
His son’s laugh would always bring him joy.
“Daaaaad!” Tommy groaned playfully, “Stop it!”
“You want me to... to stop? Stop saying I’M PROUD!” Wilbur shouted the last part, “ARE YOU SAYING YOU WANT ME TO STOP SHOUTING IT TO THE WORLD?”
Tommy’s face flushed and he shoved his face in Wilbur’s chest. Covering his face with his hands, just like Sally did when she was embarrassed.
Wilbur chuckled and pressed a kiss to his hair.
“Alright, I think it’s time we hold the baby.” Techno said.
Both Phil and Wilbur whipped their heads around to stare at him in shock.
“Uh. I mean. Your old man here is getting old and I’m sure he wants to hold his grand kid before he goes.”
Phil smacked him with his wing, “I’m not that old! And not his dad!”
“Father. You forsake me so?” Wilbur pouted, using a single finger to brush away a fake tear, “I suppose you shall never see your grandchild again.”
Phil rolled his eyes with an exaggerated huff, “Alright son. Give me the baby.”
“‘M no’ a baby...” Tommy mumbled into his father’s chest. Wilbur noticing the way Tommy’s fingers dug more into his clothes.
Wilbur bent down slightly and whispered into Tommy’s ear, “You don’t have to go with them if you don’t want to. I trust them though. I promise you are safe.”
Tommy nodded, “If you trust them then so do I.”
Wilbur smiled gently and handed him over to Phil.
Tommy was 13. He should be a lot bigger then he is but years of malnourishment has permanent effects.
And Wilbur is happy to say he can no longer see Tommy’s ribs and he has never gone hungry.
It was a slow start to eating normally. And all of it was torture. Seeing his baby only eat a tiny bit and unable to eat more.
Wilbur wanted to stuff him full of food until his ribs disappeared from view. But it was an agonizingly slow process.
They got there eventually.
Phil was shorter than the other fae but Tommy fit in his arms just fine. Tommy was nervous at first but once his eyes landed on the large black wings, he was entranced.
Small specks of gold and silver shined inside the obsidian feathers. Like staring into the night sky.
Phil opened his wings slightly, “You like my wings, little one?”
Tommy nodded, staring distantly at the sparkles.
Phil brought his wing closer, “You can touch it.”
Tommy didn’t hesitate to extend his arm, carefully brushing his fingers across the glossy feathers.
Phil smiled warmly. He was slightly worried the kid would yank them off but Tommy is surprisingly gentle.
“They’re beautiful.” Tommy breathed.
Phil didn’t know why that hit him as hard as it did, but he felt his eyes grow wet, “Thank you. That’s very sweet.”
Maybe it was just the pure wonder of a child. A child looking at you and saying you’re wonderful. Not tainted by bias. No feeling that he has to say he likes the feature.
It simply becomes a fact.
His wings are beautiful because Tommy declares it so. His wings are beautiful in Tommy’s eyes.
Phil bumped his head on Tommy’s, “My name is Philza, little one.”
Tommy gasped at the feeling surging through his veins.
Phil’s name didn’t feel like he’s father’s.
Where Wilbur’s felt deep and melodic, like the strings of his heart were being plucked and vibrating, Phil’s felt like a gust of wind, going faster than any man should, pushing into his lungs and forcing a breath.
Phil chuckled, “Maybe we can go flying some time.”
Tommy gasped again, this time with excitement instead of overwhelming power, “Really?!?”
Phil chuckled, “Course. Just say my name and I’ll fly you high above the clouds.”
Tommy smiled so brightly Phil could see why Wilbur called him ‘sunshine.’
Tommy then bent down and whispered into his ear, “Are you really my grandpa?”
Phil barked a laugh. Tommy flushing slightly.
“What? What did I say!?”
Phil shook his head fondly, “Nothing. Sorry. No. I am not your grandfather. It’s just a joke between Wilbur, Techno, and I.”
“Oh.” Tommy seemed to deflate and Phil’s heart squeezed.
“But you can join in as my grandson, if you so wish.” Phil smiled.
Tommy lit back up, “Yes!”
Phil could see Techno twitching from the corner of his eye.
Phil chuckled lightheartedly before turning to Techno, “Alright, mate. Your turn.”
Techno’s hands shot up and he made a grabby gesture. Tommy was gently placed in the brute’s grasp.
Tommy immediately melted into Techno’s warmth. Humming contently.
Techno’s eyes were wide with amazement. Both Wilbur and Phil chuckled.
“My name is Technoblade.” Techno said.
Tommy reared back. His name was like fire. Like lava was filling his being, cooling to sturdy obsidian in a matter of seconds. It whispered protection and safety. Death for all those who opposed.
Wilbur then whispered to Phil, “He broke faster than you.”
Phil chuckled, “Mate. He’s been broken since he found out you had a kid.”
Wilbur smiled gently at the pair as Techno wrapped Tommy in his arms.
Techno huffed angrily, and surprisingly Tommy didn’t flinch. Only snuggling deeper into the chest of an angry fae.
“He’s small. Too small.” Techno said, clearly sound upset.
Wilbur sighed, “He was malnourished for quite sometime. He’s always going to be a little small.”
Wilbur walked up to the two, running his hand gently across Tommy’s back. His face was completely buried in Techno’s chest and arms and his head was engulfed by the brute’s hand.
“But he’s perfect either way.” Wilbur said with a gentle smile.
“Of course.” Techno huffed, angry Wilbur would ever even assume he meant to say the golden boy in his arms is anything but, “He shouldn’t have been so mistreated.”
Wilbur smiled and gestured to take the boy. Techno curled further. A strange purr escaping him.
Phil and Wilbur stared at Techno with wide eyes.
Wilbur was absolutely way too smug for Techno’s liking. But he couldn’t bring himself to care. Purring only filling the room and almost shaking the walls.
“Tech. Tech.” Wilbur said between laughs, “You’re going to put the kid to sleep. Hand him over so I can tuck him into bed.”
Techno sighed but begrudgingly handed the nearly asleep child back to his father.
Wilbur smiled and walked over to Tommy’s room. Opening the door and quickly padding to the bed. He pulled the blankets back and gently put Tommy inside.
He ran a hand through Tommy’s soft hair. Tommy leaning into it with a content and sleepy sigh.
Wilbur chuckled and placed a kiss to his forehead, “Goodnight sunshine. Rest well. You’re so worth it.”
Tommy smiled sleepily and his eyes slipped shut. Soft breaths filling the room.
Wilbur closed the door with a soft click.
————————————————————————————
When Wilbur returned, Techno and Phil had a dark look in their eyes.
Phil opened his mouth but Techno beat him to it, “You said humans did this?”
Wilbur nodded, “Yes. They kidnapped him when they killed my wife.”
“And how did you get Tommy back then? I assume they didn’t let him into the forest.” Phil asked.
Wilbur smiled sheepishly, “I tricked some humans and ordered them to search for him. It took a few years but someone quite literally dumped him at my feet.”
“You kidnapped him!?!” Phil said in shock.
Wilbur huffed, “Not kidnapping when he was kidnapped in the first place. But yes. I ordered them to bring Tommy to me. Unharmed obviously. From there I explained a few things and Tommy he...”
Wilbur trailed off, sadness forming on his expression, “The village didn’t treat him well. Both physically and mentally. They berated him. Telling him he was an abomination. You know this. They made him sleep in the streets sometimes. That’s when the humans I ordered to find him found him. After I talked to him, he didn’t believe me. Saying he was a monster and an abomination who didn’t deserve to exist or be loved. He ran away from me. I followed but he could leave the forest, I could not. So I was stuck there and I sat and told him I’d wait. I’d wait until he returned to see how I loved him.”
Wilbur took a deep breath, “It took a whole year for him to return. Everyday I wondered if I’d ever see him again. If it was best to just send another human out to fetch him and bring him back to me. I could keep him in the cabin and he’d be safe from all the abuse but... He’d hate me. He’d still hate himself. I had to earn his trust. It was long... but he made his way back to me. Bruised and scarred. He left again and came back. The process repeated for another year and he eventually called for my help. I appeared in he village and I took him away. I took him back home.”
“And the humans?” Techno said darkly.
Wilbur gave a dark laugh, “Oh they’re quite dead. Every last one of them. They all sat around and beat my baby. They were going to kill him Tech. When he called me. I destroyed their miserable lives. It’s a wonder Sally came from that village.”
Techno huffed, “I want to see this village.”
Both Wilbur and Phil knew what Techno meant. He wanted to make sure Wilbur obliterated that place enough.
Wilbur chuckled, “Be my guest. It’s part of the forest now.”
Techno stormed out of the cabin. Phil tipping his head towards Wilbur before following after him.
————————————————————————————
The two rushed through the forest. Towards where they could practically smell Wilbur’s magic in the air.
They almost missed it. But Techno skidded to a stop when he saw a piece of wood swinging from a vine.
He glanced around and his jaw dropped.
Trees were growing through roofs. Vines wrapping the rest of the house so tightly it was hard to even see. Every home and shop was obliterated. If there were any bones left, they were wrapped in vines or buried underground. The village was nearly pitch black from the amount of leaves covering it from the sun.
Like sunshine should never step foot in this place again.
Techno smirked.
He was satisfied with the damage done here. Phil crashed down through the leaves. The two giving each other a nod before heading back.
————————————————————————————
When the two returned to the cabin, Wilbur was sitting on the couch. Book in hand and blanket over his lap. He smiled smugly at the two as they entered.
“What did you think?”
Techno huffed, “It’ll do. I suppose.”
Wilbur somehow grinned more, “I am hurt you think I’d do anything but.”
Phil huffed a laugh and closed the door behind him.
“He’s a great kid, mate.” Phil said with a smile.
Wilbur smiled back, much softer than the grin from before, “Thank you. He really is, isn’t he?”
Wilbur’s smile faded to a frown, “I just wish I was a better father for him. He deserves so much more than,” He gestures to himself, “Me.”
Phil and Techno sat on either side of him. Phil draping his wing over him while Techno leaned his head on Wilbur’s shoulder.
Wilbur feels Phil’s thumb brush away tears he didn’t know he had.
“Mate. You’re doing amazingly.”
Wilbur felt a sob trying to rip through him but he choked it down, “I failed him. So greatly. I should have been there. For both of them.”
“Wilbur.” Techno said and Wilbur focused on him.
“How long have you been holding this in, mate?” Phil asked softly.
Wilbur shrugged, ignoring more tears tracking down his cheeks, “Ever sense I lost them, I suppose.”
“How is it your fault? Did you know of an attack coming and leave?” Techno asked.
“No.”
“Was there any way you could have known they were in danger?”
“No but-“
“Did you have any clue the humans even knew of your existence?”
“No...”
“Then you did everything you could.” Techno finished.
Phil spoke up, “You’re such a good father. You never gave up on your son.”
“I couldn’t.” Wilbur whispered.
“You never gave up looking. You waited and waited for him. He’s your everything. You’ve single-handedly repaired his mind. He was convinced he was a monster yes? And you changed that.”
“But he shouldn’t have thought that in the first place...”
“Of course not. But as discussed, there was nothing you could have done. You only ever did your best and that’s better than so many others. You love that child. And it shows in a way only a father could. You’re a good dad Wilbur.”
Wilbur choked on a sob, throwing his face into Phil’s chest as he wrapped his wings around the three of them. Techno rubbing his back soothingly.
“Poor thing. You haven’t even tried to fix yourself have you?” Phil whispered.
Wilbur just cried. Not bothering to answer the question Phil already knows the answer to.
He was afraid. Afraid Phil and Techno would hate him. Hate Tommy. Make life so much harder for him but...
They’re not. He needed this. He needs people in his life too. And he’s so happy and lucky to have two great friends like this.
Tommy will need friends eventually...
Wilbur chooses not to think about that. His baby can stay his until the time comes for that.
————————————————————————————
After Wilbur calmed down, he thanked the two and headed to bed himself. Offering his living room for the other two fae.
They accepted and went to sleep.
Wilbur closed his eyes, feeling a weight off his chest.
Tommy was home and safe. He was told he’s a good dad and that what happened wasn’t his fault.
It will take him time, just as it has taken Tommy time. But eventually he’ll believe it.
————————————————————————————
Wilbur was woken up by the air being taken out of his lungs. He felt himself be pulled until he stumbled into a dark room.
Tommy’s room.
Clearly indicated by Tommy’s cries.
“Baby?” Wilbur called as he walked to Tommy’s bed.
Tommy reached his hands out desperately as tears fell down his red, puffy face.
“Oh love...” Wilbur sat down and scooped him up, placing him in his lap as Tommy linked his feet around Wilbur and wrapped his arms around his neck.
“What’s wrong darling? Tell daddy what’s wrong.” Wilbur murmured as he stroked Tommy’s head.
“N-nightmar-mare.”
Wilbur buried his face in golden locks, “Well now. It’s all over now. No more scary dreams. Do you want to talk about it?”
Tommy took a shuddering breath and squeezed him tighter, “You... you said you didn’t love me and-“
Tommy was squeezed so tight the breath was nearly knocked out of him.
“Thomas.” Wilbur said, “I could never. Ever. Not love you.”
“I kno-now.” Tommy hiccuped as he snuggled into Wilbur’s neck.
Wilbur hummed, pressing a kiss to his hair, “Sweet boy. Good job calling for me sweetheart. You did a good job. I’m so proud of you.”
Tommy nodded.
“Wonderful boy. Sunshine. So bright.” Wilbur continued to mutter pet names, Tommy’s sobs slowly subsiding and his muscles untensing.
Wilbur began to sing.
“If they knew, sweet little you
They’d end up, loving you too
All those same people who scold you
What they’d give just for the right to hold you
From your head
Down to your toes
You’re not much
Goodness knows
But you’re so precious to me
Sweet as can be
Baby of mine”
Eventually Tommy was limp in his father’s hold.
Wilbur humming his approval and brushing a few sticky hairs out of Tommy’s tear tracked face. He leaned back and laid on the bed. Covering the both of them in blankets and making sure Tommy was tucked into his chest.
He kissed Tommy’s head one more time, reminding himself he is a good father, “Love you.”
————————————————————————————
Tommy was crouched in the grass, Wilbur crouching next to him and smiling as Tommy held his hand out.
Phil and Techno were watching from a few feet away. Warm smiles on their face as they watched the two.
Tommy had a serious expression on his face. His tongue sticking out, biting it slightly as he concentrated.
“You don’t need to stick your tongue out Toms.” Wilbur said with a small laugh.
Tommy immediately pulled his tongue back in and squinted at his hand.
A small bit of red mist began to swarm around it and his eyes went wide. Face splitting into an excited smile.
The mist dissipated and his expression slumped into a frown.
He threw his head back in a groan, “Ugh! This worked before! Why isn’t it working now!”
Wilbur chuckled lightly, rubbing his hand soothingly down Tommy’s back, “It’s okay sweetheart. We’ve only been practicing for about two years. You have a lot longer to practice. It takes time.”
Tommy slumped down in the grass, continuing his groans.
Wilbur just shook his head fondly and laid down on top of him.
Tommy squawked, “Wil- Get off!”
“Hmm...” Wilbur feigned thought, “No.”
Tommy squirmed and clawed at the grass in front of him but couldn’t move. Eventually he let himself flop down onto the grass and sigh in defeat.
Wilbur just hummed in satisfaction and stretched, still laying there as he looked up at the clouds.
“That one looks like a bunny.” Wilbur said as he pointed up.
Tommy turned his head slightly, “It’d be real nice if I could see but I can’t turn that far because somebody decided I make an excellent pillow.”
Wilbur looked down and smirked, “Promise just to turn around if I get up?”
Tommy grinned, “Promise.”
Wilbur sat up and Tommy bolted.
“I CAN LIE!”
Wilbur grinned, knowing very well that would happen as he got up and chased after him.
It only took a few seconds before Tommy was tackled to the ground. Both rolling down the hill in a pile of limbs and laughter. The smell of grass and flowers filling their senses.
Their rolling stopped and Wilbur was on his back, lifting Tommy into the air. Tommy giggling at the action as he was thrown into the air and caught again.
Wilbur wore a wide smile at the sound, catching him one more time and pulling him in. Rapidly pressing kisses to his head and face.
Tommy let out a pure giggle, trying to push away but only being pulled closer.
“Dad! Dad stop!” Tommy said between laughs.
Wilbur grinned, squeezing him tightly. Pressing kisses to his nose.
Bushes rustled and Wilbur’s head snapped up. The other two fae straightening their backs.
Wilbur stood up and pushed Tommy behind him. Scowling at the bushes.
A small head poked out.
A human head.
It was small and had brown hair. Bangs that nearly covered both eyes. A very round and young looking face.
“Well hello!” The boy shouted as he stepped into the clearing.
Tommy peeked his head out from behind Wilbur’s legs. Face lighting up at seeing someone around his age.
Then he remembered the other kids in the village.
He took a deep breath. He’s okay. Wilbur will protect him.
He steps out from behind Wilbur and towards the boy. They were about the same height.
Tommy tilted his head to the side, “Hello? What’s your name?”
The boy absolutely beamed, “My name is Tubbo!”
The three and a half fae felt power rush into them, the name feeling like a thousand bees crawling on their skin. Tommy smirked. Wilbur bent down and smirked as well.
“Little one. Hasn’t anyone taught you not to tell a fae your name?” Wilbur said darkly.
Tubbo’s eyes widened for a moment before his signature smile returned, shocking the fae, “Oh yeah. I forgot!” He laughed, “You guys seem nice anyway! I heard you all laughing and you were playing with a kid so the stories didn’t seem all that accurate!”
The faes’ faces softened.
Tommy extended his hand, “You can call me Tommy.”
“I like that name!” Tubbo said as he shook his hand.
Tommy blushed slightly, “Thanks. I like your’s too.”
Tubbo kept his smile as he looked at the other fae, “What can I call you?”
“Call me Wil.” Wilbur said softly, he’s the first person he’s ever met that hasn’t mentioned what Tommy is.
“Call me Phil.”
“Call me Techno.”
Tubbo nodded, “All excellent names. Expected something different from fae but they are very nice.”
“You’re very special, aren’t you?” Wilbur asked with a tilt of his head.
“My dad says I’m unique!”
That got a chuckle from the fae.
Suddenly Tubbo grabbed Tommy’s wrist. Wilbur stiffening and preparing to pounce.
Tubbo just started marching further into the clearing, “Let’s play! Hide and seek maybe? Or tag! What do you want to do?”
“What’s... what’s tag?” Tommy remembers hearing other kids playing it but he doesn’t know the goals or rules.
Tubbo gasped, “You mean you haven’t played tag before?!? This is a crime! This is against the law!”
“It is?” Tommy asked curiously.
Tubbo nodded seriously, “It has the gravest of punishments. But we can stop that by playing tag! So. We better get started or else you’ll have to be put to death!”
Tommy’s eyes were wide with worry. Tubbo’s completely serious.
“Okay. Okay teach me.” Tommy said.
Tubbo nodded, “So. One of us will be ‘it’. And listen carefully... this is where it gets complicated.”
————————————————————————————
Phil was hanging upside down from a tree. Wilbur’s arms shaking as he stayed in a hand stand. Techno had a serious expression on his face as he stayed frozen. Arms out straight as Tubbo swung from one of them.
Tommy was panting as he ran up towards him. He tapped his toes three times, then Tubbo’s head four times. Tubbo fell to the ground, scrambling up as Tommy reached towards him.
Tubbo ran as fast as he could. Running into Wilbur and making him fall over with a yelp.
“You’re in my way!” Tubbo yelled.
“You ran into me!” Wilbur shouted back.
“That’s what you get for getting in my way!”
Wilbur simply looked puzzled as Tommy passed him and fell to the ground.
“You’re both out.” Tubbo said.
“I didn’t do anything!” Wilbur screeched.
“I don’t make the rules!” Tubbo said seriously.
Tommy gasped for breath, sweat dripping down him, “Are you sure this is how you play tag?”
“Are you seriously doubting me right now?”
“Humans lie!”
“I’m offended. Truly.”
A branch snapped and a loud thump followed. Along with a small “oof.”
Tubbo continues to glare at Wilbur, “Techno wins!”
The three on the ground groaned loudly and Techno pumped his fist in the air.
“NOT EVEN CLOSE!”
“Well. At least you guys won’t die now.” Tubbo then tapped his chin in thought, “Or is it you have to win a game of tag? Well! Better safe than sorry!”
More groans echoed through the clearing as Tubbo smiled.
Suddenly loud shouting was heard and the group looked towards the forest.
“TUBBO!” They heard from beyond the bushes.
Tubbo cupped his hands over his mouth and shouted, “OVER HERE!”
There was a pause before more bushes rustled and a man burst through. His face covered in a scruffy beard. Hair the same shade of brown as Tubbo’s but better trimmed.
“TUBBO! I TOLD YOU NOT TO-“ The man’s words died in his throat as he saw Tubbo standing amongst the fae.
The fae’s sparkling with inhumane beauty.
“Tubbo? Who’s that?” Tommy asked as he stepped in front of him.
“That’s just my dad!” Tubbo said.
Immediately the man fell to the ground. Bowing down to the fae.
His entire body shaking, his voice shattering as he spoke, “I beg for your forgiveness. I offer you everything. My riches. My name. My very will. Just please. Free my son. Take me instead.”
The three adult fae tilted their heads. Inspecting the man.
Wilbur slowly stepped towards him. The man flinching as he heard the grass crunch beneath the fae’s feet.
Suddenly fingers pushed against his chin and he was forced to face up.
Wilbur’s brown eyes sparkled and swirled. The man’s scared expression faltering to something entranced, only for a moment before he snapped out of it and squeezed his eyes shut.
“Please.” He begged, “Let my son go.”
Wilbur chuckled and the man cracked his eyes open.
“You’re lucky you ran into us instead of other fae. You and your son are free to leave. Tubbo was just playing with my son. You may call him Tommy.” Wilbur released the man and he sucked in a deep breath. Not even realizing he hadn’t been breathing.
“Dad!” Tubbo called and he rushed to him, slamming into him and knocking them over.
The man wrapped his arms around Tubbo and squeezed tightly. He stood up and looked over the fae.
“We don’t owe you anything?” The man questioned.
Wilbur shook his head, “Nothing at all.”
The man turned his head towards Tommy, squinting at him before his eyes widened, “You’re not-“
“You’ll both owe me your life if you don’t watch your next words carefully.” Wilbur hissed.
Tommy stepped in front of Wilbur, “Daaaad. Calm down. Tubbo was nice!”
Wilbur sighed and picked Tommy up, “I know bubba. I just don’t want you getting hurt.” He nuzzled his nose against Tommy’s.
The man coughed, “I uh- I’ve... He’s your’s?”
Wilbur nodded and observed the man carefully. He didn’t seem to be disgusted. Just surprised.
“Where’s... the mother?”
Wilbur cocked his head to the side, “Dead. She was killed by your species.”
The man flinched, “Wasn’t she... a human?”
Wilbur nodded, “They didn’t appreciate us.”
The man’s face fell into one of sorrow and... sympathy, “I’m sorry to hear that. You can call me Schlatt, by the way.”
Wilbur smiled slightly, “Very well. You may call us Wil, Phil, and Techno.” Wilbur pointed to each one respectively.
Schlatt nodded, “I don’t... I can’t speak for all of humanity but what they have done is wrong. I appreciate your forgiveness of the human race. That you’d not bring harm to my son. It is kinder and more wise than any I know.”
Wilbur smiled, “My wife was a good woman. I’d be a fool to assume all humans are bad. I will say I cannot believe you. You may be here to trick me. But I assure you, if you try you will fail and you will not be spared proper punishment.”
Schlatt dipped his head slightly in a bow, “I’d have it no other way.”
Tommy squirmed in Wilbur’s arms and so did Tubbo in Schlatt’s.
“This is boring adult talk!” Tubbo shouted as he managed to get out of his father’s grip.
Wilbur chuckled as he set Tommy down and the two boys ran back to each other.
Tommy beaming at Tubbo, “Want to see something cool?”
Tubbo nodded frantically before Tommy pulled him away. He hovered his hand over the grass and concentrated. Both watching the grass intently while the adults laughed.
Wilbur turned to Schlatt, “Perhaps we can speak of why you’re here?”
Schlatt nodded and they sat a top the hill.
“I came because a village did not pay their tax. I was sent to find out what had happened and I... I still haven’t found the village but according to the map, there’s forest where it should be.”
Wilbur grinned, “That would be my doing.”
Schlatt’s eyes widened, “You... you killed those people? I thought-“
Wilbur glared, “They are the ones who killed my wife. And committed many other crimes against my family.”
Schlatt’s shoulder relaxed, “Ah. I would have done the same.”
“Why did you bring Tubbo along?” Phil finally spoke up.
Schlatt smiled sadly, “My wife died a few years back. Got an ugly disease and didn’t recover. I’ve been taking care of Tubbo since then. I was sent on this mission last minute and I had no one to watch him. So, I took him with me with strict orders to stay by my carriage. Of course the kid doesn’t listen to me and ran out into the woods and immediately gave his name to fae.”
Wilbur grinned, “I believe he saw Tommy having fun and didn’t think about who we were. A dangerous perspective. But this time, it appears to have paid off.”
“I really do appreciate it. It’s... amazing to see someone like Tommy.” Schlatt said, Wilbur could hear the honesty in his voice, “Half human, half fae?”
Schlatt chuckled, “Didn’t think I’d see the day.”
Wilbur softened slightly, looking back to the two boys as a flower sprouted from the ground. Tommy and Tubbo shouting with joy and Tubbo tackling him.
“I think. If anyone can mend the broken trust between our species, it’s him. My brilliant boy.” Wilbur said with a smile.
Schlatt shrugged, “I’ll figure out some story to tell everyone back home. Maybe I can move out here. Tubbo doesn’t have many friends and it seems him and Tommy are having fun.”
“I think... He’d like that. Maybe this will be a start.” Wilbur smiled at Schlatt.
“The start of something greater.”
————————————————————————————
In the future, perhaps a sunshine boy will shine bright enough to clear out the darkness.
Maybe he’ll be a bridge between two worlds, a new one being born in the process.
And when the sun sets, when darkness tries to consume him and deceive him, he’ll have friends and family to pick him back up and scare the darkness away. Allowing him to shine brightly again.
When he stumbles and falls, someone will catch him.
When the world tries to split apart again. When he is forced to be the one to keep it together.
He won’t be alone.
When the weight of it all begins to crush him, someone will gather him into their arms and whisper in his ears just how strong he is.
How bright he is.
When the world finally sees the bright sun it’s been given, his family and friends will be right behind him.
Through good times and bad. Through highs and lows. Through laughter and tears. Through loud sneers and whispered assurances. Through slaps and soft touches. Through anger and joy. Through hate and love.
Thought darkness and light.
He will never be alone.
He will always be...
Wilbur’s baby.
