Work Text:
"I think we're at a point where we actually need to start thinking about this." Marco catches Star's attention while she's getting ready for the day.
"About what?" Star asks, pulling on her outfit.
"Baby names. We're 25 weeks in."
"Is that a particularly big milestone?"
"Well, technically, though it would be premature, you could go into labor any week now, but we'd have to get you to the hospital if they came out this early because that's an emergency kind of situation."
Star looks at her reflection and brushes her hair. Her baby bump is a bit more noticeable now. "Did you have any suggestions?" she asks. She continues with a sassy, "let me guess, you have a list."
"I had a theme suggestion first." he replies.
"Oh? What theme?"
"Most of your family on your mom's side are named after celestial bodies. Moon, Star, Comet, Meteora, like a Meteor, Estrella's Spanish for Star, Celena is like Celene the Moon Goddess, Crecenta is like a crescent moon, Eclipsa, like a solar eclipse, Solaria, like Sol, earth's sun..."
"How did I only notice me, Mom, and Grandma Comet's pattern..." Star says, setting down her brush.
"So, to sort of keep up something like that tradition, how would you feel about trying something based on Earth constellations?" He pulls out a piece of paper and a pen and looks at her expectantly.
"I don't know about this Marco," she says warily. "You know I'm not very traditional for the most part."
"I know, but this would be a new tradition that you would be able to start. By going similar but also it follows from Earth culture, not just Mewni culture."
Star pauses for a moment in a thinking pose, then folds one arm over the other, and gestures with her free arm. "Alright, Mr. Diaz, you have the floor."
"Thank you Mrs. Diaz. Now the typically known constellations are the ones that match with people's horoscopes, so we can start there and move on after we go through that list. Top of the order is Capricorn, your star sign."
"Don't love that. Mainly because it has corn in the name."
"Ok, so no Capricorna." He crosses the name out of the Boy and Girl column. "What about Aquarius or Aquaria?"
"I like the second one."
"Pieces or Piecesa?"
"Another miss for me."
"Ok, Aria, or Aries?"
"I like Aria, but not Aries."
"Next is Taurus. Maybe Taura for a girl?"
"Taurus sound pretty rugged. Don't really care for the other one though."
"Gemini" Marco says quietly.
Both of them say "no," at the same time and then laugh loudly for a moment. Marco collects himself before continuing.
"I wouldn't suggest Cancer but maybe Canca or Cancera?"
"Nope."
"Ok, Leo or Leah?"
"I do like Leo."
"Ok, and next is Virgo."
"Counterpoint, Vigo."
Marco scribbles in her suggestion. "Got it. Libra or Libro?"
"I might get used to a name like Libra, but it's a maybe for now."
"Don't worry, I wasn't super attached to that one. And then there's Scorpio or Scorpia?"
"Next one," Star waves her hand.
"The last of the traditional star signs is my sign, Sagittarius, Sagitta, or Sagittaria to feminize it."
"I kinda like Sagittaria."
"We could even shorten it to Sage while she's growing up. Ok then there's the oddball that was added in the 70s, Ophiuchus."
"I'm not confident I could yell that across a room."
Marco snickers into his hand before crossing it off. "Cassiopea?"
"Yeah, I like that one."
"Ursa?"
"I think my dad would like it, but I'm not crazy about it."
"Lyra?"
"Lyric's the name of Eclipsa's great-grandma, I'd rather it be something a bit more different."
"Huh, I didn't know that." Marco scanned his list. "Draco?"
"Put that as a maybe."
"Perceus?"
"Nah."
"Orion? or Oriana?"
"Oooh! I like Oriana the best out of all the girls names you've said so far."
"Ok, let me just make sure there's no more boys names I liked I didn't ask yet... Cygnus?"
"A maybe."
"Lupus?"
"Isn't that a disease?"
"Ok, point taken. And last one, Argo."
"Argo is a no go."
"Alright then, so for boys names, the ones you liked are, Taurus... Leo... Vigo, and the maybes are Cygnus, and Draco. For girls, you said your favorite was Oriana, and the others were Aquaria... Aria... Saggitaria... Cassiopea, and as a maybe, Libra."
"So is there any in that list that stands out to you?" Star asked hesitantly.
"For a boy's name, my three favorites are Draco, Leo and Vigo out of the ones you narrowed down. And I like all the girls names you listed. Aria and Libra are nice and short, but all of the other ones have pretty easy short nicknames. Ori, Aqua, Sage and Cassie. So I'm pretty happy with these options."
"So how do we choose from those?"
"Well, once we find out if it's a boy or a girl, that does make some of the choices for us."
"Yeah, but shouldn't we narrow it down to one or two of each?"
"We could ask our parents for their opinion?"
Star hummed noncommittally.
"There's always the 'pull it out of a hat' option" Marco suggested.
"Really? Just leave it to chance?"
"There's a plus side of doing it that way, because if you're disappointed with what you pull you know that's not the choice you wanted and can throw it out."
Star paced before saying, "Since you narrowed it down to three for the boys, I'm going to narrow it down to three for the girls. Oriana, Cassiopeia... and hm... ok. Sagittaria. There. I made my mind up."
"Ok, do we wanna pull from a hat right now?"
"Maybe we can wait a little longer." Star said, pacing. "I'm not sure I want to pick that way. Or maybe we'll wait till the baby comes. I don't know."
"That's fine. We don't have to decide today. And if you think of other names you like, we can talk about it as we get closer. I just wanted to start having some discussion. Because otherwise we probably would have had to make a decision that's not thought out. And I didn't want one of us to pick a name that the other person didn't want."
"Yeah, you're right, that makes sense."
"Just one thing."
"Yeah?"
"Don't take a name Eclipsa, Meteora or Mariposa suggest as being a winner without mulling it over first. I will not agree to something like Axey, or Swordward or something."
"Marco!" she replied through laughs. "If I asked Tom, he'd be hoping we name it Draco, I know it."
"I think it's a cool name," Marco said with a shrug, "but if you don't like it we can go for something else."
"Wait a sec... what about middle names?"
"You want to pick the first name first, then decide what sounds good with it. So we can mull it over and come to each other with suggestions."
"Vigo Esteban Diaz."
"I could get behind that."
"Or Leo Angelo Diaz."
"Oriana Bella Diaz?"
"Maybe..." Star leaned into Marco and embraced him with a kiss. "But you're right. we probably have more time to think about it."
"I probably will be thinking about it whenever I have a spare moment."
"Anyway, I'm nervous and excited for all this."
"Me too, Star. Me too.
