“Colin saw, then, why the three were friends, or maybe he saw proof of it—all three of them looked devastated by the question. And that wasn’t a reaction you’d have, to a stranger you didn’t remember—” STAB MEEEEEE

case fic“What, exactly, are you expecting us to sign, Director?” asked Murdock, pulling Hogan’s attention back.
“It’s a standard NDA,” Hogan said, as Vilma placed a stack of paper on Murdock’s desk. “We didn’t bring a Braille copy, but we can wait while you—”
“Absolutely not,” said Murdock.
Director Hogan took a deep breath. “This isn’t negotiable.”
Murdock matched his tone. “You want us to come with you to an undisclosed location—”
“I want Peter Parker to come with me, and I can disclose that to him if he signs—”
“You come here with no notice, no warning, and you want things? You’re the only one getting anything out of this, Hogan, what’s the incentive for us?”
“I can tell you that,” he said, “if you sign.”
“We don’t sign NDAs, as a rule. We’re not signing this one, and I am advising my clients not to sign either.”
“You must understand,” Vilma said, “that there has to be a measure of trust—”
“This,” Murdock said, stabbing the desk with a finger. It missed the stack of paper by an inch or so, but that didn’t lessen the gesture's intensity; he held the room transfixed. “This is not trust. This is a threat. This is your promise to sue us for breach and our promise not to breach so we won’t be sued. You want trust? Offer it.”
“I—” Hogan started.
“Non-disclosure agreements work on those who fear them, Director Hogan. I have had Wilson Fisk’s—Kingpin’s—hands at my throat. The Punisher aimed a gun at my head and fired. Do you think, for one moment, that I fear a lawsuit?”
“It’s—it’s a formality,” Hogan said, and he sounded like Colin felt: a little bit stunned.
Murdock scoffed. “Then it’s a waste of paper. Make your choice.”
Hogan looked at Nelson, but his jaw was set. “Things like this, we follow Matt.”
