Work Text:
Kohane has a friend who is coming to see them perform.
Apparently, she’d done her own first live show recently and wanted some inspiration? Advice? On how to improve her performance. Akito doesn’t mind her watching their show but was a bit annoyed at being made to talk to another damn newbie and explain “performing more = better at performing.” Even worse, she's coming with Kohane from school which meant she was meeting them at Weekend Garage and they wouldn’t have any real practice or planning time before the live. Not that they needed it, the setlist was in place and familiar, and they’d warm up backstage at the venue but still. He’s pissed off on principle.
So the three of them are waiting, An buzzing with excitement over the opportunity to meet one of Kohane’s school friends, Toya with a deadpan face #2 that means he is mildly interested, and Akito mentally preparing himself to put on his good child voice.
The bell chimes as Kohane opens the door and everything changes.
“MIKAN-CHAN???” the girl, the not-Kohane girl. the. THE girl screeches.
“MINORIN???” Akito screeches back.
Akito can barely hear Kohane’s “You know each other??” for An’s wheezing laughter as she repeats “Mikan-chan” over and over.
Akito is dead. He’s never recovering from this. And it's all his own fault.
It all started about 4 months ago.
Akito was looking for some inspiration. Nothing about this new choreo he was working on felt right. Even if the individual moves were good, flowed together, and suited the music, they still seemed stale, like each one was copy pasted from another dance. So here he was, looking at dance videos. Sue him. He scrolled past all the people he knew or watched, looking for a video that was both by someone he’d never seen before but also a song he knew. He’d hit a couple of duds (not necessarily bad dancers, just nothing helpful to him at the moment) when he found just what he was looking for. It started with an introduction, not his favorite but definitely not a dealbreaker either.
“Hi everyone!! It’s More More Jump’s Hanasato Minori, Minorin!!! Today’s song is a bit different from our usual style, but I’ve been listening to CDs a friend lent me recently and this song was so good I had to dance!! So today’s video is dedicated to her! Uh-uhm, yeah! I hope you enjoy!!”
The introduction itself did not inspire confidence in Akito, but when the music started the entire vibe of the video shifted. It was an intense choreography, but she was keeping up. She was a bit sloppy in spots, but her flow was good, and her energy was amazing. It wasn’t the kind of inspiration he was expecting, but he felt like he’d stumbled across something important.
When the video was over, he went to the channel to see what else she’d covered. Turns out More More Jump was an idol group. It was a bit annoying sorting through all of the other videos for dance covers, and she was right that her usual genre was a bit different, but it wasn’t like he never listened to other styles. It was important to keep a broad perspective! Most were covers, but then he stumbled across…
[Original Song] Tenshi no Clover [Minorin] Solo Dance Cover
It was the first one of their original songs he’d heard. It was bright and peppy, but most importantly it was fun. The song, the dance, everything about it. He found himself analyzing the dance. When the video was over, he played it again. And again. Then, after he checked his door was locked and swapped out for some wireless headphones, he danced along. And holy shit, it was a blast.
He checked out their other original songs after that. They were all good, but none of them compared to that first song.
After one last listen to it, he realized just how late it had gotten and cursed as he rushed through his night routine.
The next morning, he brushed off Toya’s concern, saying he stayed up too late trying some new choreos. When Toya asked if he found anything useful, he paused before saying no.
Despite what he’d said, he found himself going back to the group’s Youtube channel, and to Minorin’s covers specifically. He memorized all their original choreographies (they were fairly new, so there weren’t many) and checked whenever they post a new video to see if it’s a dance practice. It was interesting watching the way they practiced. Their full group practices were one thing, with usually Airi or Haruka leading, but there was also a series of “secret” dance practices with only Minori and Shizuku. Akito wondered why they bothered calling them secret when they’re uploaded publicly, but he did enjoy watching the two less naturally talented members help each other through the harder choreographies. The frequent checking of the reference video, taking turns trying and confirming with each other, and watching their mismatched styles slowly gel but not entirely synchronize reminded him much more of how he tended to practice with his crew. He even found himself using some of their advice in his own practices.
After a while of checking their channel every week or so, More More Jump uploaded a new video, an announcement. It wasn’t a dance video, but Akito clicked it anyways, accepting he was maybe a bit more dedicated to them than he thought. And he wasn’t disappointed, seeing as the announcement was a performance. He immediately clicked through to read the details and check the venue only to see… it's online? He was a bit disappointed. Sure, Akito loved music, but he especially loved the feeling of a live, with the performers and audience feeding on each other’s energy. An online live just wouldn’t be the same. He clicked through to the ticket website anyways, and was hit with yet another roadblock.
“Please Link Your Twitter Account.”
He hadn’t exactly been hiding his newfound interest, but he’d also definitely kind of been hiding it. Toya would probably cry (read: pout (read: show deadpan face #7)) if he knew Akito was listening to music that he hadn’t told him about. Aside from that, Akito also didn’t like the idea of his twitter that he uses mostly for their own gigs to end up showing something about some random idol group.
This whole ticket process was too much anyways, having to make a new account and all for a live show that wouldn’t even be in person.
…
Yeah.
…
Akito made a new twitter account.
Username: @orangeclover_1112
Display name: 🍊
Bio: MMJ wota. Minorin oshi.
He considered adding more, but he didn’t have anything else to say. He set the profile picture to a cute picture of Minori, set the header to another cute picture of minori, and went to buy the livestream. Account linked; ticket bought annnnd. Oh. It asks whether he wanted to send a tweet about it. So apparently all of that wasn’t necessary. But he’d done it anyways so, yes. Tweet sent.
Nearly immediately, he gets a DM. Another MMJ fan.
@yasashiiiiizuku
Sorry for the sudden DM! I saw you bought the livestream ticket! Are you a new fan??
Well thank god he didn’t put it on his main account.
He replied and they chatted for a bit. They followed each other and the friend recommended he make an intro post.
@yasashiiiiizuku
You don’t have to include a picture or your name or anything. Just put that you’re a minori oshi, maybe your favorite song or some other interests, and that you’re looking for friends!!”
Originally Akito would’ve thought against it, but he’d had fun chatting with this… friend so he might as well give it a try. And with that, he sent his first tweet:
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
Hi I’m 🍊.
I’m new to twitter, looking to follow other MMJ fans. I’m a minori oshi. 🧡 My favorite MMJ song is tenshi no clover. 😇🍀 Like this or follow me and I’ll follow back. Nice to meet you! #MMJ_FF
He made some more friends, went to the livestream, and to his surprise (or not?) had a blast. It still wasn’t the same as a “real” live, but the website had a chat function and there was the same energy of fans hyping each other up. Some typed out fancalls in the stream chat, and the spam of L – O – V – E ! and the flood of teardrop emojis for the start of Color of Drops added their own flavor that made watching in real time different from a Youtube video or live DVD. Akito sat at his desk, headphones on and focused, trying to keep up with the energy of the performance and the chat all at once. But when tenshi no clover came on, he said fuck it and danced along.
After the show, still hyped up on music but with no Toya to talk to about it, he took to twitter and made a thread on his impressions. Some of his friends liked the tweets or struck up conversation, he gained some new followers and followed some back. Oh, and Minori liked his tweets. Nice.
Wait.
Minori liked his tweets!?
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
minori liked my tweets!?
@yasashiiiiizuku
Congrats!!
@asdjljda
Aww so cute!!!
@bsdjasldakd
Yeah she usually likes a lot of fan tweets, especially after their performances!! I actually use that to find other fans lol! Nice to meet you!!!
@cajlakjd
LMAO egosearching hours must still be going, she liked this one too
After that first live, he started watching all of their performances. He preferred to watch in real time (and even learned the chat fancalls) but no matter what he always made a thread on twitter with his thoughts after the show. It’s a few lives later when one of his friends replied with a question.
@yasashiiiiizuku (replying to @orangeclover_1112)
You always rave about Tenshi no Clover but it’s the only song you don’t join in the chat? Not a single 🍀! too caught up in watching to comment??
🍊@orangeclover_1112
It’s hard to type while dancing.
@yasashiiiiizuku
you know the dance?? too cool!! did you learn it from minorin’s dance lessons?
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
I know all their dances… and no I just learned it by watching. minorin does dance lessons???
@yasashiiiiizuku
I CANT BELIEVE YOU CALL YOURSELF A MINORI OSHI it’s like the best corner on their regular streams!!! you need to get your head out of the clouds and start watching them too there’s so much good stuff you’re missing out on
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
fine I’ll give them a try…
@yasashiiiiizuku
& don’t think I didn’t notice that casual little “all their dances” I expect video proof!!!
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
in your dreams
@yasashiiiiizuku
aww don’t be shy about it! it would make them so happy to know they have a fan dedicated enough to learn their dances!!!
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
im not being shy I just don’t want to post my face online.
@yasashiiiiizuku
fair enough… in any case I expect to see you at the next regular stream!!!
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
roger
And so Akito started watching some of their regular streams as well. He didn’t go to all of them (he’s a busy guy) and he very rarely commented, much to his friend’s chagrin, but he did enjoy them and found they were the perfect background noise for doing homework.
MORE MORE JUMP! @mmj_official
Solo streams? From your favorite idols!? More (more) likely than you think!!!
To celebrate the holiday weekend, more more jump is having special solo talk streams!! See the schedule below to make sure you don’t miss out~!
Akito’s phone pinged. A DM.
@yasashiiiiizuku
You’re watching right? You’d better be watching.
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
I can’t make the second one but I should be able to make the one she does in the morning.
And I’m only going to minorin’s. I don’t have time to be watching 2 livestreams every day.
@yasashiiiiizuku
fiiine I’ll accept it. But you’d better talk this time!! It’s minorin’s first solo stream she needs friendly faces.
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
We’ll see.
Despite it all, Akito woke up early on the morning of the stream, even if it is on his day off. He was meeting with Toya later for lunch and then practice so it was better to wake up early anyways. He got ready and ate with just a few minutes to spare before the scheduled start, so he pulled up his computer and scrolled through twitter until the tweet dropped for the start of the stream.
Minori was in a different location than where they usually stream, sat at a desk in probably her bedroom. When the video started, she was leaned in messing with the camera. It shifted in and out of focus, and tilted to the side before she straightened it again. She got the camera set and went to say good morning before realizing her microphone was turned off. Finally after a few minutes everything was set and ready to go. She apologized for the technical difficulties and started saying good morning to everyone. She started with a general hello but then as the good morning comments rolled in she replied to each one individually. As they slowed down, she was clearly struggling to decide whether to move on or continue waiting on people to join. Akito gets a DM.
@yasashiiiiizuku
I know you’re awake you’d better say good morning. 🔪
And so he bites the bullet.
🍊 @orangeclover_1112: Good morning minorin!
Minori’s face brightened with recognition.
“Ah!!! mikan-chan is here too! Good morning!”
🍊 @orangeclover_1112: mikan-chan… is that me?
“AH I’m sorry! It’s like mikan oranges because your name is the orange emoji! and I thought mikan-chan sounded cute!! Is it not okay?”
🍊 @orangeclover_1112: no, mikanchan is fine!!!
“Thank goodness… we were actually talking about nicknames the other day at school and…”
And from there, Minori continued her stream. She was much more comfortable as it went on but still struggled at times to find the right balance between reading and waiting on comments and moving ahead with talking on her own.
“Thanks for coming to the stream today everyone! I was nervous to be talking all on my own but I had lots of fun!!”
A flood of “good work” comments came in.
“Wow you’re all so sweet! Everyone, I hope you have a more more good day!!! This is More More Jump’s Minorin, signing off!”
And the stream ended.
Akito didn’t have too much time to spend on twitter before his lunch date with Toya so he just sent one tweet.
🍊 @orangeclover_1112
I don’t know if I can go to anymore minorin solo streams. they’re bad for my heart.

…
I’m still in high school.
@yasashiiiiizuku
FORGET I SAID ANYTHING we can just see each other at the venue then!! Or not!!
mikan-chan 🍊 @orangeclover_1112
I still want to meet, just meant I can’t drink lol. Some of us could meet at a café and head to the venue together?
@yasashiiiiizuku
Good idea! I’ll make a group chat later so we can choose a place.
The day of the live was there in the blink of an eye. Akito changed his outfit plan about 20 times before finally deciding on a simple, but cool light orange hoodie, and a plain black backpack. More important, though was that in the backpack he had his first ever handmade uchiwa. One of their friends had the bright idea that they should also put their wota names on uchiwa so that MMJ could recognize them, since they’d never seen each other in person. So, while on one side Akito’s uchiwa says Minori’s name in carefully cut out bubble letters with equally bubbly hearts all around it, the reverse side says “It’s 🍊”.
After he checked himself in the mirror and decided he looked normal enough, he headed out to go to a café that is thankfully on the other side of town near a venue that he has thankfully never performed at.
He walked into the café and saw a group of 7 huddled around a table. Some of them were sporting old QT or ASRUN merch. It’s an odd feeling, knowing he knew them but having no clue who was who. They really should’ve sent pictures beforehand. Most them were older but not too old, office workers on their days off, one is an incredibly old man who has way too much energy for his state, and there’s also a pair of high school girls who seemed like they might’ve known each other beforehand. They were all talking naturally despite the age gap.
He walked up to the table.
“Yo.”
The conversation halted. A middle aged man in a CHEERFUL*DAYS shirt introduced himself.
“I’m @yasashiiiiizuku, and you are…”
Akito paused.
“I’m… mikan.”
“Mikan-chan!!!!”
After some digs at his bad boy vibe, and of course his hair (and much insisting from Akito that he did not dye it orange for minorin), they hit it off talking about more more jump, and the live. Soon enough, it was time to go.
On their way to the venue yasashiiiiizuku pulls him aside.
“This is your first idol live right?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you plan on doing the dances?”
“What?”
“If you want to dance along that’s fine, I wanted to make sure so I could show you to the right place and you won’t be in anyone’s way.”
“Oh, cool. Then yeah, I’ll dance.”
“Nice, me too!”
And when they got to the venue, they did just that. They met a few others planning on dancing as well and exchanged twitter names while waiting for the show to start.
And when it did. Holy shit.
Akito knew that music was best experienced live, but had gotten used to the feeling of attending shows online. It was one way, in his mind, that he separated More More Jump from what was to him the more “real” performances he attended and performed in regularly. But seeing More More Jump live made it crash together, and he found himself feeling that overwhelming love for music and performance again. The feeling was different than Rad Weekend, that sheer awe of seeing so many musicians at their peak with music that he’d never heard before vibrating him to his core. This music was familiar, and still being polished. But there was that same feeling of connection with the rest of the audience in a moment that happens nowhere but a live. He didn’t dance along for every song, spending many just watching and cheering along, being swept away in the moment. And to those he did dance along with, he found himself equally swept away. And he thought he was going to die when Minori saw his uchiwa (turned to the “it’s 🍊” side) and gave him an excited wave. Maybe making that ugly thing was worth it.
After the show, they met back up with their group as well as a few others who hadn’t made it to the café. They gathered around the entrance to the venue and took a group photo, and mingled around taking selfies and talking about the live.
yasashiiiiizuku approached him again.
“I didn’t realize when you said you could dance that you could DANCE. You could go pro with those skills!”
“Ha, I’m nowhere near that good. It’s just something I do for fun.”
“If you say so. I still think you should post dance covers online. You’d totally blow up.”
“Even more reason not to.” Akito joked.
yasashiiiiizuku laughed along.
After they got home, everyone tweeted about how fun the live was. A couple of pictures were posted, with faces censored. Full photos were shared in DMs.
It was fun having names to faces and feeling closer to everyone, but otherwise not much changed. Akito hadn’t seen anyone he knew there, nobody posted photos publicly. His personal and idol lives had managed to remain entirely separate.
Until now.
When Akito regains consciousness (read: gains the mental fortitude to lift his head off the table), Kohane and Minori are still in the doorway. An is still laughing her ass off at the discovery of the nickname “Mikan-chan.” And Toya. Well, visibly nothing has changed, but under the table he’s put his hand on Akito’s leg in support. Bless Toya.
The pair make their way to the table and, confused, Kohane opens.
“So this is my friend from school I mentioned… but it appears you two have met before, Shinonome?”
Poor Minori looked like a deer in the headlights and who knew what she would say, so Akito took over.
“Fine, fine, I’ll explain just give me a second.” He took a deep breath. “I’m her fan.”
All he got in return were blank stares. Minori appeared ready to die or run. Akito continued.
“So as a musician, I listen to different types of music for inspiration. I’m sure you all can relate to the sentiment. I happened across her group, More More Jump and I happen to like their music. That’s all.”
An is not satisfied.
“That is most definitely not all! Why is she calling you Mikan-chan!!!!”
Deep breath #2.
“The live stream website they use has nicknames. My nickname is an orange emoji. Thus, Mikan.”
After a long drawn out interrogation of every single aspect, An is finally satisfied. Kohane is happy Akito likes Minori’s group and is sad she wasn’t able to go to their first in person live. (“We’ll have to go to the next one together!!” She promised happily, entirely oblivious to his mortification at the idea.) And Toya is… suspiciously quiet. It’s like his normal quiet, but suspicious.
By the time the dust settles it’s almost time to go to the live house. Kohane apologizes to Minori that they weren’t able to talk more but they all plan to come back to Weekend Garage after the show so they can give her advice then.
Despite the chaos, the show goes well. They’ve really hit their stride recently. Akito was worried it would feel weird seeing Minori from the other side of the stage, but once he’s performing, he doesn’t think of it. Seeing her in the audience, she looks like she’s having a blast with the rest of the showgoers. Good.
After the show, they all get a picture together in the venue and head back to Weekend Garage to talk.
Minori is quiet on the walk back, but it’s easy to see her mind is working on overdrive.
They sit down with some drinks, and it erupts.
“That was SO COOL! Kohane you looked so confident on stage!!! And you said you only started this year? That’s too amazing!! And M-Shinonome! I had no idea you could perform like that! Or, well, I mean… I had some idea, but this was a whole new level!! Aoyagi was so cool too!! And Shiraishi you were practically sparkling!!!”
An and Minori hit it off quickly, with An basking in the praise and gladly answering any questions Minori had. Toya was his usual quiet self, replying when spoken to and interjecting occasional advice when he had something he deemed worthy of saying. And Kohane was playing mediator well.
Akito hadn’t said a word since they’d gotten back to Weekend Garage. He wasn’t trying to be rude, and he wasn’t exactly nervous but he just didn’t know what to say. On one hand, there was the way he viewed Minori as a fan and on the other, there was the way he saw her as a fellow performer. Sure, she had imperfections. He could point out flaws or give tips all day but also as a fan, many of those same flaws were her charm points. Not that improvement would be a bad thing, but if he gave advice would she think he didn’t like those aspects of her performance? If he said she was perfect, would she think he didn’t want to see her improve herself??
An nudged his side.
“Come on, you’ve been awfully quiet there, fanboy. You’re the only one here who has seen her perform live, you’ve gotta have some advice.”
Akito took deep breath #3.
“I think that I am biased.”
An laughed at him, as expected. “Come onnnn, that’s boring. You’ve got to have something better than that!”
He looked at Minori. She looked back, expectant. He looked away. God this was nerve wrecking.
“I think, first and foremost, what will help is performing more. As you’ve done more live streams you’ve gotten more natural at them, and it’s the same at adjusting to a live audience. But also, I think you don’t need to feel pressured to do well immediately. Your situation is a bit different than ours. Right now, we’re plenty popular, but when we first started there were a lot of haters. Every performance was a fight to get acknowledged. For you, most of the people who are watching are already fans or at least interested. You have some who dislike you thinking you’re riding the coattails of your group, but by now most more more jump fans see that’s not the case. The people there to see you perform are there to see you. They don’t want an idealized version, they want to see the you of right now and watch your growth over time as you adjust to that stage. Which is why, I don’t think you need to rush getting used to it.”
He finally looked back to Minori and she had tears in her eyes.
“M-m-mika—I mean, Shinonome. Thank you so much!!!”
An clapped him on the back. “Nicely said, fan boy.” He kicked her under the table.
They stayed a bit later to finish their drinks, then An and Kohane decided to walk Minori home together since she wasn’t familiar with the area.
Akito looked at Toya.
“Want to head to the sekai?”
“Yeah.”
And so they did.
Jingling into yet another café, they were greeted by Meiko. She seemed to be the only one in, which was well enough since Akito wanted to talk with Toya and everyone else tended to be more. Distracting.
They sat in some of the comfy chairs. Akito mingled his legs with Toya’s just because.
“What’s up? You’ve been quiet today.”
He waited as Toya collected his thoughts.
“Why didn’t you tell me about More More Jump?”
Akito considered. “I don’t really know.”
Toya nodded, accepting it. “I don't like it. Finding out there’s a group you’ve been listening to so much, even going to see them perform live, without mentioning it, it hurt.”
“I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean to hide it from you. It just didn’t seem important at first, or, like, relevant? And then when it was, I just didn’t know how to bring it up."
Toya looked at him entirely too earnestly. “We're partners. I want to know all the sides of you. I want to be someone you can tell about everything, whether it’s important or relevant or not.”
“I know, I know. I’m sorry for keeping it from you. From now on I’ll show you every song I listen to ever, even if it’s a commercial jingle that’s stuck in my head” –that gets a small smile from Toya, good—“I do have a livestream archive that hasn’t expired yet, if you’d like to watch it together tomorrow.”
“I would like that very much.”
☆☆☆Bonus☆☆☆
Akito returns home exhausted. After a full performance plus the stress of directly speaking with Minorin, all with the cherry on top of An being as annoying as fucking possible about the whole thing, not to even mention that he’d made Toya sad (not very, but still), he is ready to go home and sleep and wake up when he wakes up and text Toya in the morning about meeting up.
He’s tucked into bed when his phone pings. And again. And again. And oh my god shut uppp who could possibly be texting him this much. He looks at his phone to mute it and sees it is twitter, about 20 notifications so far. In fear, he opens it.
Minori @minori_mmj
Went to see a show with the awesome @VividBadSquad at @venue today! They were so cool on stage, I’m more more motivated to give it my best too!!

Akito goes to his VBS twitter. He already has new followers; some he knows, some he doesn’t. He goes back to his idol twitter. He doesn’t even bother looking at his mentions, going straight to his DMs.
