Summary
In his first life, L died in the arms of his greatest enemy.
In his brief second one, he died alone.
And in his third, too-long life, L died anticipating finally getting even with the man who'd won their game one too many times.
And Light Yagami? If he'd known this is what picking up the Death Note would bring....well, he'd probably still have done it anyway.

Vicious eyes dilated, black swallowing red.
“—I’ll show you that I have enough power to chain the entire world as well, because L does not lose. This system is the one that benefits us most, because it gives the choice to not act, rather than the order, and it demands proof of guilt. If it did not, I would have executed you the day I met you, because I knew you were Kira from the very start, and only my Justice protected you.”
Light snapping back, eyes furious, a being of elegant cruelty.
“And just like in that first world, that so-called real world, in which you must have been caught and executed.” Light flinched. “L can solve any case, and those who choose to use the Death Note incorrectly will be caught by me as well… because no one will ever be more perfect than Kira.”
And that, L learned anew, with every beat of his heart.——Human nature, after all, was so very complex. Even the most obvious crime was built upon the backs of multiple lives' worth of experience. The life of the criminal. The lives of his parents. The lives of the company he’d grown with, of the friend’s he’d made. The lives of those financially superior to him, and those financially inferior. The lives of those who’d been kind to him, and those who’d been cruel, and those who’d been nothing at all.
The lives of those he loved… and those he didn’t love enough.
In a sense, every crime was the conclusion to a long story. Because no baby was destined to take a life.—im loving this up

This is maybe the peakest fic I've ever read in my entire life in a fandom. Some can rival this in other fandoms but this is like the best one yet I think highkey across all of them. That's a huge fucking compliment. Anyone who's reading this who likes lawlight or death note or anything about this fandom should read this right now immediatly.
If by chance I'm looking back on my bookmarks some time in the future and forgot what this fic is like/is about then here's this advice from past me: read it again. NowPeakest of peak.
