Chapter Text
Akutagawa Ryunosuke didn't expect to find a connection with anyone at college, let alone someone like Atsushi Nakajima. When they first met in class, Akutagawa was stoic and cold, keeping to himself as always. But Atsushi, with his gentle, calm demeanor and bright smile, seemed to break through his defenses in unexpected ways. They ended up sitting next to each other by chance, and slowly, what started as brief, awkward conversations after class turned into something more.
Atsushi's friends began to notice the change in him first. During study sessions, Atsushi's gaze would sometimes drift towards the door, as if expecting someone. Kunikida, ever the observant one of their friend group, raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Ranpo, on the other hand, was the first to point it out.
"You're always looking for someone. Got a secret admirer, Atsushi?" Ranpo teased, nudging Atsushi in the ribs.
Atsushi's face flushed bright red, and he stammered, "N-No, it's not like that. We're just... friends."
But Atsushi's friends weren't convinced. Poe, quietly reading in the corner, smiled knowingly. Yosano simply shrugged and muttered something about young love, while Dazai leaned back with a smirk. Kyoka, though quiet, nodded her head in agreement with the others.
On the other side, Akutagawa's friend group had taken notice as well. Chuuya, ever sharp-eyed and blunt friend, was the first to confront him.
"You've been hanging around that Omega from class a lot, Ryunosuke. His name is Nakajima Atsushi, right? What's the deal with him?" Chuuya asked one afternoon, lounging in the campus café with the others.
Akutagawa, as usual, didn't show much emotion, but there was a flicker in his eyes. "Yes, his name is Atsushi and It's nothing. He's just... interesting to talk to."
Gin, his sister, smiled softly but said nothing, though her eyes sparkled with amusement. Higuchi, as always, hung on Akutagawa's every word, but even she could tell there was something more to it. Tachihara and Kajii exchanged knowing looks.
"He's cute," Kajii said, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "You're not falling for him, are you?"
Akutagawa scowled, his lips tightening. "Shut up."
But the more time Akutagawa and Atsushi spent together, the more it became clear to everyone around them that there was something more than just friendship growing between them. Their classmates began to notice the way Akutagawa's typically cold and harsh demeanor softened when he was around Atsushi, and how Atsushi's nervousness seemed to ease when Akutagawa was nearby.
Both groups watched with interest and a bit of amusement as their friends danced around their feelings. Akutagawa, despite his stern exterior, was fiercely protective of Atsushi, and though Atsushi was shy, he always gravitated towards Akutagawa, trusting him in ways he never really did with others.
The slow burn between them was palpable. Late-night study sessions turned into long conversations about life, quiet moments of companionship, and lingering looks neither of them seemed to realize they were sharing. As the weeks turned into months, Akutagawa's friends began to exchange bets on how long it would take for him to admit his feelings.
"It's obvious," Chuuya remarked one afternoon. "He's totally into him. It's just a matter of time."
Meanwhile, Atsushi's friends were having a similar discussion. "He's so oblivious," Kunikida sighed. "But it's clear they like each other."
Ranpo grinned. "Oh, this is going to be fun to watch."
As the tension built between them, their friends watched and waited, wondering who would make the first move. Both Akutagawa and Atsushi were too wrapped up in their own insecurities and fears to realize just how much they had fallen for each other. But one thing was certain, this slow burn was about to ignite into something neither of them had ever expected.
As time passed, the subtle connection between Akutagawa and Atsushi grew even stronger, though neither of them dared to acknowledge it outright. Their late-night study sessions turned into casual hangouts, often just the two of them, walking through the campus late at night or grabbing coffee together in-between classes. Even though their interactions were often filled with awkward silences or fumbling conversations, there was an unspoken comfort between them that neither of them found elsewhere.
It was during one of these late walks that Akutagawa began to realize just how deep his feelings for Atsushi were. They had finished studying in the library, and as usual, Akutagawa walked Atsushi back to his dorm when it was this dark because he didn't trust Atsushi walking back by himself. The night air was crisp, and the campus was mostly deserted, save for a few stragglers heading back from their own late-night classes or study sessions.
Atsushi walked beside him, a gentle smile playing on his lips as he spoke about something random, though Akutagawa found it hard to focus on the actual words. He was too busy noticing the way Atsushi's silver hair reflected the moonlight tonight, the way his soft voice seemed to calm the constant storm in Akutagawa's mind.
"You know," Atsushi said, breaking Akutagawa from his thoughts, "I'm really glad we met in that class. I was so nervous at first, but you always seem to make things easier." He chuckled softly. "Even if you don't talk much."
Akutagawa tensed at the compliment, unsure of how to respond. He had never been good with expressing emotions, especially not the unfamiliar ones swirling inside him. But something about Atsushi's words tugged at a deep part of him.
"I don't mind," Akutagawa finally muttered, his voice low. "Talking isn't always necessary."
Atsushi nodded in agreement, looking a bit surprised but pleased by Akutagawa's response. The two fell into a comfortable silence again as they continued walking, the only sounds being their footsteps on the pavement and the distant hum of the campus.
Meanwhile, Akutagawa's mind was racing. He wasn't used to feeling this way, so vulnerable, so unsure. The bond he shared with Atsushi was unlike anything he'd ever experienced with anyone before, and it terrified him. What if Atsushi didn't feel the same? What if this fragile connection shattered the moment he admitted how much he cared?
Little did Akutagawa know that Atsushi was having similar thoughts. For all his gentle nature, Atsushi had never been good at reading his own emotions, especially when it came to Akutagawa. He admired Akutagawa's strength and determination, the way he carried himself with a quiet intensity that Atsushi could never match. And despite Akutagawa's harsh exterior, Atsushi had always sensed something softer, more vulnerable beneath the surface, a side of Akutagawa he felt privileged to see, even if only in small glimpses.
But what if this was just one-sided? Atsushi often found himself overthinking their interactions, wondering if he was imagining the tension between them. Every time Akutagawa's gaze lingered on him a little too long or his voice softened when they spoke, Atsushi's heart would race, but he never had the courage to ask if Akutagawa felt the same.
As they approached Atsushi's dorm, the silence between them stretched. Akutagawa stopped just short of the entrance, unsure of how to end the evening. Atsushi turned to face him, his usual smile in place, but there was something different in his eyes tonight, something hesitant, as if he, too, was waiting for something more.
"Thanks for walking me back," Atsushi said softly, shifting on his feet.
Akutagawa nodded curtly, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. He was trying to gather the courage to say something, anything, that would convey the feelings he was too afraid to admit. But the words stuck in his throat.
Before either of them could speak again, a voice interrupted from behind them.
"Well, well, look who we have here."
Both Atsushi and Akutagawa turned to see Chuuya approaching, his trademark smirk firmly in place. Behind him trailed Higuchi and Tachihara, the former waving shyly while the latter simply gave a knowing grin.
Chuuya's eyes flickered between the two, amusement dancing in his gaze. "You guys on a date or something?"
Atsushi's face flushed a deep red, and he started stammering, "N-No, we were just-"
Akutagawa shot Chuuya a sharp glare, his usual scowl in place. "Don't you have something better to do, Chuuya?"
Chuuya chuckled, clearly enjoying himself. "Relax, Ryunosuke. We're just passing through." He glanced at Atsushi with a more serious look. "But maybe you two should stop dancing around each other. It's getting painful to watch."
Atsushi's blush deepened, and he shifted awkwardly, unsure how to respond. Akutagawa, on the other hand, felt a surge of irritation at Chuuya's comment. He wasn't wrong, but that didn't make it any easier to hear.
Without another word, Chuuya and the others continued down the path, leaving Akutagawa and Atsushi standing in the awkward silence they'd left behind.
Atsushi looked down at his feet, biting his lip. "I... I should probably head inside," he mumbled, clearly flustered by Chuuya's remark.
Akutagawa, still reeling from the interruption, opened his mouth to say something, but once again, the words wouldn't come. Instead, he simply nodded, watching as Atsushi turned and disappeared into the dorm building.
As the door clicked shut behind him, Akutagawa let out a frustrated breath. He didn't know how much longer he could keep this up, this constant push and pull of emotions, the uncertainty of what he meant to Atsushi and what Atsushi meant to him.
He was never one to hesitate or second-guess himself, but when it came to Atsushi, everything felt different. He needed to figure this out, before it was too late.
