Work Text:

Logan was stumbling away out of Stryker’s facility and had escaped into the woods. He didn’t know how long he had been running all he knew was everything hurt. He felt like he was still burning and that feral side of him was still very much in the forefront driving him to run, to fight, and to kill.

He realized something was following him very quickly, but he knew it wasn’t the people from the facility, so he ignored it until he was sure he was safe.  Only then did he growl and demand whatever it was to come out. He had no clue what the hell it could be, and it didn’t matter he could kill it if he had to.

The leaves of the canopy started rustling and he snarled. Then a small pink head poked out of the leaves and Logan froze. The creature popped the rest of the way-out floating upside down and just staring at him.

Logan couldn’t breathe.

"Mew." The pokémon greeted and Logan tried not to gape at the mythical creature in front of him. He knew what this pokémon was everyone did just no one was sure it was even real. It held out a paw and Logan took it between a few of his fingers tentatively…carefully (what was he going to do deny it??).

Suddenly a cooling wave went through him and just like that the pain and burning went away. He almost collapsed in relief but managed to stay standing but only just.

"... Thank you." Logan squeaked out unsure what else to say or do.

"MEW!" Mew exclaimed excitedly, swooping around in the air before tugging on the hand that he was still tentatively holding. Mew started trying to lead him away from the horrors of the lab and Logan followed, why wouldn't he? Maybe just maybe he would be ok.

Mew led him to a hidden cave and Logan sighed in relief, it was far enough away they wouldn’t be able to find him and it was shelter. Logan collapsed finally against the back wall and Mew watched him worriedly. Why was this ancient power worried about someone like him he didn’t know, but it felt nice to know at least some living thing cared about a monster like him.

Logan looked up at the small pink creature and tilted his head curiously and it copied him tilting its head right back. “Why help me?” He asked, unsure if he would get an answer but needing to at least voice it.

Mew started gesturing and trying to explain. Logan knew he had the ability to sort of almost understand animals. He figured it was his mutation, and he had been thrilled to learn it also worked on pokémon. Not as well but he could usually understand basic feelings and some other small stuff.

Logan tried to pick up on what he could, “Because of other pokémon going through similar stuff?” He tried and Mew shook its head annoyed and tried again but slower. it didn’t help much but he appreciated it.

“Because I remind you of…” He trailed off as the small creature pointed at itself, and Logan froze. “You?” He asked tentatively and Mew nodded its head in confirmation. What a fucking reason how could he remind the obscenely powerful pokémon in front of him of itself.

Mew started gesturing and babbling again and Logan was so tired the adrenaline was wearing off and he was crashing hard. Mew noticed and stopped realizing he just needed to rest and everything else could wait for later. The creature flew up to him again and carefully curled up on his lap.

Logan looked down at it and frowned, “I don’t want to hurt you because of nightmares.” He whispered into the darkening cave. Mew just stared at him and snuggled further into him and Logan relented.

Logan woke up peacefully though he wasn’t sure how, he looked around and saw he hadn’t in fact dreamed it all because Mew was there flitting around a pile of berries. The pokémon perked up and looked at him as he stirred and flitted over cheerfully greeting him. Logan couldn’t help the smile that crawled across his face. Mew tugged him to the berry pile and gestured for him to have them he was definitely hungry and while he much preferred meat he wouldn’t say no to free food.

Logan offered some to the mythical but if refused and Logan after some charades figured out it had already eaten. After he finished, he wasn’t sure exactly what to do but Mew didn’t even pause as it flew around him before hovering at his hand and gesturing at it. Logan frowned, “You know about my mutation?” he asked tentatively, and Mew nodded.

After a lot of trial and error, he had figured out Mew had been scoping out the facility for a while and had been trying to figure out how to get him out from the moment he had entered. He didn’t know what to think of that, but he did know one thing for sure. He had to destroy that place to stop others from experiencing the same thing.

He told Mew as much and the pokémon had just nodded enthusiastically and just like that he had help. They made their way back to the Weapons X Facility and he let Mew scope it out as he waited hiding in the forest. It didn’t take the mythical long before it was back attempting to explain what it had seen.

The place was still in shambles from his escape, and they didn’t seem to be expecting his return, which was a stupid assumption, but they weren’t too bright in the first place thinking they could control a monster like him. They figured out a basic plan and quickly started the takedown. It was embarrassingly easy, all things considered, especially with the new claws. The chaos and fear caused desperation which was easy to take advantage of.

He drew the attention to himself while Mew flitted around the facility and its deeper sections trying to see if there was anyone else that needed help. Thankfully no one else had been taken yet, which made the next part incredibly easy. Logan focused on finding and destroying all the equipment he could get his hands on or claws in. Mew helped and by the time they realized it wasn't just Logan it was too late not that there was much they could do against the ancient pokémon.

By the end, Logan is covered in blood, most of which is not his own with Stryker underneath him pinned by his claws. Mew is floating next to Logan blood splattered across its fur and tiny fangs on show matching Logan’s own snarl. Stryker looks terrified and Logan just laughs low and deep. “MEW!” Mew cries eyes glowing with anger and Logan understands easily for the first time in the past 24 hours.

“Yeah, your right he doesn’t deserve to live.” Logan agrees as he sinks his claws into the monster’s chest, and it feels good.

oO0Oo

Mew never left and Logan never complained they had bonded and became close friends. Logan had never had any pokémon and never planned to have any either. He wouldn’t dare drag any of them along with him. Over the years some had followed him from place to place before wandering off but that was of their own free will. Mew seemed to respect this and had stuck around with him far longer than any other pokémon.

He loved the little bastard and found he really enjoyed its company. Most people had no idea about Mew since the little shit was good at hiding when it didn’t want to be seen or alternatively it was sleeping in his jacket…it did that a lot. It took a long time for Mew to show itself to people Logan was around a lot and Logan understood why perfectly. It had been sought after for so long it didn’t trust easily, and he could relate. On a few occasions, it had shown itself immediately

It had popped up for the professor when Logan had first talked to him alone. Xavier was stunned when Mew popped out of Logan’s jacket and wrapped itself around his neck while waving to the other man. Logan had just laughed and scratched at its chin.

“Logan is that..” he trailed off awe evident. Logan just nodded, “Yep Mew has been with me since right after Weapons X it saved my life and has never left.  it normally doesn’t show itself however. What’s the deal with that?” He asked the pokémon.

Mew replied, “Mew!” and gestured and Logan nodded along, “I see.” He responds and the professor just watches on stunned. “You understand it?” He asked and Logan nodded, “I do, and I’ve honed it over the years with Mew. It says that it trusts you so you can know about it but wants you to not tell the others.”

Xavier nods and agrees easily.

Mew stays hidden in the mansion and only comes out when everyone is sleeping, and Logan is walking around. If Logan isn’t sleeping Mew is happily flying around him as he does whatever he has decided to do be that watch TV, read a book, or just sit with him in the kitchen and talk with him. Mew loves it when he reads it will curl up in his lap as he reads aloud so it can listen to the stories. If he was sleeping Mew was as well. Its favorite place is curled up on his chest. Mew had long ago explained that its psychic powers help suppress his nightmares, which he appreciates to no end.

Rogue had been the second one to learn of Mew when she followed him into the forest one afternoon. Logan knew she had followed him and just hoped she wouldn’t scare away the animals.

Logan had called out to her to stop hiding after they got deep enough knowing he needed to not freak her out when he eventually started hunting. His instincts had been screaming at him for days now and he was going to remedy it today, but Rogue wouldn’t understand unless he explained

“Kid I know your there.” He called with a sigh. She had attached herself to him and he didn’t know how to run her off he didn’t need to get attached and the fact his brain was already trying to label her as his kit didn’t help. Suddenly Mew popped out of the leaves of the canopy from where it had been following him. Logan just groaned as Rogue’s eyes went wide in shock.

“Logan…” Rogue tried but stopped as the feral just glared at the pink pokémon.

“Really?” He asked the pokémon who just huffed at him before flying around a stunned Rogue. “Logan this is…” Logan cut her off, “Yes that’s Mew I know but it DOSEN’T like showing itself.” Logan said pointedly.

Mew glared at him before gesturing between Logan and Rogue and babbling. His face went red, “MEW!” Logan snarled embarrassed. Mew didn’t relent however,  it just continued to glare at him. Rogue looked between the two with wide confused eyes.  “What is going on Logan?” She asked a little desperately.

“Mew is… a good friend who is always around but isn’t a fan of revealing itself to people. You are the second person to see it since I started living in the mansion.” Logan answers with a sigh relenting. Rogue just stares at the pokémon who is floating right in front of her now. “You caught Mew?” She asked not quite shocked but… “No, no I haven’t caught a pokémon ever Mew just sticks around.”

Rogue decides that’s actually more impressive.

“Why show itself to me?” She asked and Mew gestured threateningly at Logan and he relented. “Because it says you're like my kit.” He ducks his head refusing to make eye contact. Rogue perks up and smiles widely at that and the pokémon cheers happily.

That evening after Logan manages to catch a rabbit and upset Rogue in the prosses since she wasn’t a fan of killing animals…or of him eating them raw…but she could deal. He would use the carcass for something…maybe Rogue would be less upset if he made her something from it...ANYWAY!

After that Mew would hang around Rogue, she had grown to love the little bastard, and it was mutual. Rogue would stay up with him the nights she couldn’t sleep, and Mew would lay in her lap while they watched TV. Logan couldn’t remember the last time he had been more content.

Mew finally made itself known to the entire mansion when it was attacked. Logan had been fighting while Mew kept the attackers away from the students while remaining hidden. Well until some bastard got a gun out and aimed it at Rogue who couldn’t dodge out of the way. Mew had appeared out of nowhere with a cry and sent a psychic blast that threw the man into the wall where Logan killed him quickly.

Logan was panting as he listened for anyone else before sighing in relief when it was silent. “Thank fuck…Thanks Mew can always count on you.” He called to the pokémon who was looking over Rogue worriedly. “Mew.” Mew responded after concluding Rogue was in fact fine and then flitted over to Logan and curled itself around his neck and buried its face in his hair.

“I know I know.” Logan reassured as he pets at its flank. Mew just curled its tail around his arm and Logan sighed. The others in the vicinity just stared in disbelief and Logan knew he would have to explain once again but that could wait. “Let’s go tell the others it’s safe.” Logan announced and started shooing the others away. He would need to dump the bodies elsewhere away from young eyes.

Hours later and a long explanation everything was fine, and Mew was content sleeping around his neck as he sat in the kitchen unable to sleep and still on edge. Rogue was on the couch just a room away finally having nodded off and letting him escape to get a breath of fresh air. He was still half running on instincts and fighting himself to not go check back up on her.

On cue Storm walked into the kitchen he looked up at her and she just sat across from him. “How are you holding up Logan?” She asked. Logan just sighed and broke eye contact, “I’m fucking pissed I didn’t sense them before they got in. They came into my territory and-“ he cut himself off fuck he didn’t mean to say that he must have been more tired and on edge then he thought.

Storm blinked wide eyes at him, obviously taken aback. “Territory?” She asked him curiously and he blushed slightly. “You know I’m a feral.” He stated more than asked and she nodded, “When I’m at a place for long enough I start seeing it as mine. That means to me it’s my job to protect it and sometimes others within it.” He didn’t explain further not wanting to dig into the weird instincts and thought processes. He had a hard time making sense of it, he doubted it would make any more sense said out loud.

“What about your little friend there?” She asked thankfully changing the subject. Logan smiled softly as he ran a finger down the pokémon’s tail. “Mew’s fine just   it’s been up since I woke up yesterday the little bastard deserves some sleep.” Logan replies and Storm gives him a pointed look. “So, Mew can sleep but you won’t?”

Logan glares at her, “I’m fine besides I’ll hear anyone coming before anyone else can.” He shoots back. Storm snorts, “Yes because you being tired will be so helpful if something else happens.” She snarks at him and Logan growls. “Ah yes because I’ll sleep so well after the ki- Rogue was almost shot and I failed my fucking job! That will go SOOO well won’t it Munroe!” He snarled a bit frantic, and Mew stirred Logan froze, Mew drifted off again and he sighed.

Storm blinked a few times at his outburst before sighing herself. She forgets Logan isn’t like the rest of them. He’s much older than all of them and has been through enough horrors to last a thousand lifetimes. That isn’t even addressing the fact he’s a feral and so his brain just works differently. He’s upset about what happened and is blaming himself and it’s only making it worse because it’s perpetuating the issue.

“I know Logan none of us are going to sleep well but that’s why I’m up we are taking shifts because we all need to rest. That way we can be as prepared as possible if it happens again.” She tries again and Logan visibly relaxes. She continues, trying her best to reason with Logan’s instincts. “You saved a lot of us because you did realize what was happening before anyone else. We need you prepared for if it happens again and that means you need sleep.  If something happens, I promise you'll be the first to know.”

Logan deflates at that and for just a moment Storm sees so much pain and fear in his eyes. It makes her feel sick, but he shakes himself and gets up. “I’ll be on the couch with the kit.” He says before leaving the room and Storm has to fight back a smile in case he turns around. Sure enough, an hour later when she goes to check on them Logan is dead asleep with Rogue against his side with a blanket between them and Mew is asleep on his chest.

oO0Oo

Mew and Logan are just a constant in the mansion after that and eventually, the awe dies down (though it never quite disappears). Mew can usually be found hanging off Logan who is always happier when the pokémon is around. It’s clear that the two are each other’s best friends and it’s honestly heartwarming. Logan insists Mew is hysterical, but everyone doubts Mew says half the things Logan says it does.

There had been many occasions where Mew had stopped Logan from hurting others because he went into a berserker’s rage by putting a bubble around him. Which everyone was thankful for because they had all seen just how hard it was for him to control himself while lost to his instincts. Mew could also easily calm him down when he got particularly worked up. Since they had known each other for so long it made sense Logan’s instincts didn’t see the pokémon as a threat.

Logan and Mew would also host what the student’s dubbed ‘story time’ which was just the two of them being ambushed by students. Asked questions that inevitably got expanded upon until it was a full-fledged conversation between the two that was somehow the most interesting thing that was going on in the school. The most interesting story discovered so far was of Logan talking about an old friend of his named Wade.

Apparently, they worked together in a spec ops group, and he was the only person Logan hadn’t hated. Logan said he was funny and good at what he did, and he was sure he was still kicking around somewhere. Rogue seemed particularly interested in the stories that involved Wade and had speculated to the other students that they may have been a thing.

People usually took her word on stuff like this since she knew Logan the best and with the way he talked about the other man it wouldn’t surprise them. Wade as they learned was from BM or ‘Before Mew’ as they deemed those stories, and they were always much different than the AM stories. Mew however, seemed relatively knowledgeable to the old stories but had always perked up when it heard one it didn’t know.

Something else the mansion's inhabitants noticed was Mew didn't seem fond of some of the X-Men. Mew as they would come to realize was incredibly petty. If you didn’t treat Logan well, you would have the mythical to answer to and it was never fun. Mew didn’t actively and outright antagonize people, but it was close. Mew would make your life just that bit harder because it could.

Be that moving important papers or locking you out of places after you magically lose your keys. Small things that were just annoying and tedious, but it was incredibly effective. Rogue was thrilled to realize Jean was Mew’s least favorite and the knowledge she wasn’t the only one off put by her was rectifying.  The best part was Logan didn’t seem aware of the majority of it. He knew about the Jean stuff but other than that Mew hid its other shenanigans from him.
