When the Cloud Knights had brought Ren in to see him, he'd told Jing Yuan that there was a price to be paid, but that it was not his responsibility. Jing Yuan thinks about the past seven hundred years and how Ren's words were right on the mark. The price was never his to pay. It should have been Jingliu, Dan Feng, Yingxing. Instead, they all left him behind when Baiheng had fallen ill, and Jing Yuan has been paying it for them ever since.
"Well, who will relieve me of this burden?" Jing Yuan wants to ask the other man. "You?"
"I will not apologize," Jingliu spits. "Not to a boy that has never been able to see the bigger picture because he'd always been preoccupied by matters of the heart. Not to a boy whose talents languished because he was too busy playing house to become the warrior I raised him to be. You disappoint me, Jing Yuan. I should have never taken you as my disciple."
"I was your best friend, your confidant," Dan Feng tells him, "but you were never mine."
"When are you going to forgive me?" Yingxing asks him. His lips brush Jing Yuan's ear when he speaks. "When are you going to let go of all this pain?"
"You've learned to hide your strengths, Yuan'er," Baiheng smiles at him. "Look how far you've come, all on your own."
Jing Yuan opens his eyes. All these years, and he has never stopped dreaming of them. They still haunt him. He wonders if that will ever change.
