    Summary

“Entrust your fate to the hands of God and He will deliver you from evil,” they say. “ You only need to have faith.”
    No.
    Not in here.
    Not in this place.
This is where fate and faith come to die.

1804. The young guard Javert finds himself tried and convicted for a crime he didn't commit - and the red string of fate tying him to Jean Valjean becomes a chain.

“You don’t know.” Durant sighs, pulling his arm free. He turns his back to Javert, shaking his head and sinking his hands in his hair. “You don’t know. Damn it! Do you still not realize it? Do you not get how dire your situation is?”

    “The letters….”

“No one believes the letters exist!” Durant suddenly explodes, losing his usual calm exterior. “No one whose opinion matters, at least!”

    “I am……”

“Not guilty, I know, I heard! But you look guilty, and frankly, the public does not like you!”

“This is justice, not a competition for the public’s esteem!”

“ Everything is a competition for esteem, Javert! That’s why you have people like me!” Durant whirls back around to Javert, gesturing wildly. “Do you realize that probably the most I can do for you by now is twist this into third degree murder or manslaughter, which will still get you a life sentence? Do you realize that if Monsieur Thierry had come from means, had the right family name, heritage and connections, instead of climbing up the social ladder himself, there would be nothing I can do to spare you from the guillotine? There would be a mob right outside this door, calling for your blood!”

    “But I didn’t do it!”

    “They don’t believe you!”

    “But it’s the truth!”

“How can a man with your background, a man who lived in prison, be possibly so naive?”
    —————-
“This is the third time someone has said something like that in the span of a week,” Javert says quietly. “What is going on?”

Valjean doesn’t meet his eye. Instead he stares down at his plate, taking a piece of black bread between his fingers. “Javert,” he murmurs barely audibly. “Don’t be naive.” His cheeks redden slightly.

“I am not!” Javert frowns in irritation. “I do not understand. I am not corrupt, I have never been - and besides, as you said, I am in no position anymore to -”

“That’s not what they are implying,” Valjean interrupts him. He is still turning the bread around without eating it. “Come on, Javert. Don’t make me spell it out.”

‘He must think I am the stupidest man on earth,’ Javert thinks and his stomach coils in rage.

“Just because I have held myself to a different standard than being fluent in the common tongue of bagnard-speech,” he begins, feeling himself grow angrier with every word, “doesn’t mean I’m-”

“They think we’re fucking.” The piece of bread breaks between Valjean’s fingers and the crumbs fall back into his plate. “Alright? They saw me coming to your aid, and the only reasonable explanation they could come up with was… that. They think I am…” He makes a swift gesture with his hand, still carefully avoiding Javert’s eyes. “You know.”

“Oh.” Javert closes his mouth and heat creeps into his face. For a moment, silence falls between the two of them.

Well, this reasoning at least explains Valjean’s reaction. Javert would have almost been amused about the dark-red blush on his chain-mate's cheeks, then the darker reasoning behind his words sinks in and blooming embarrassment turns to anger.

These bastards. These filthy, mindless animals are implying that this man of all people would make an immoral arrangement? Would force another to sell himself out to him in exchange for protection? This man, of all people? The one who made himself into a human shield between Javert and an unspeakable fate, despite their mutual loathing?

“That’s disgusting!” For all his faults, for all his shortcomings, all these confusing contradictions united in one man, Valjean possesses something that everyone else in this place obviously lacks: honor.

Valjean frowns, his head still turned down. “Why… would that be disgusting?” he asks quietly.
