“Sweetheart! I’m so glad you’re here,” Jack’s mother said, walking across the carpet in a hurry. “I was so worried about—oh!” She stopped midsentence, looking at Robby, who stood by Jack’s side. She turned back to Jack. “I must have misunderstood. When you asked to bring an important friend with you, I’d taken that to mean you had a new woman in your life.”
Jack could almost hear the quotes around “important friend” and flushed, glad he couldn’t see Robby’s reaction to his mother’s declaration.
