“Hey man,” Eddie says, sliding into the seat next to Buck and pulling him out of his thoughts. “You good? You’ve been staring at that wall for a while now.”
Buck blinks as he raises his head, caught off guard by Eddie’s concern. Part of him wants to snap at Eddie—tell him to go ask Hen, since they’re so close now. Buck’s jealousy has always had teeth; a beast he doesn’t always know how to control, or how to keep from snapping its jaws at people.
But right now, it’s overshadowed by the excitement of Eddie looking at him; seeing him. There’s a warmth spreading through his chest, one he hasn’t felt in a little while, and all he can think is more, more, more and look at me, look at me, look at me.
Keep looking at me. Look at me forever, because when no one looks at me, I feel like a ghost.
Or: Buck doesn't know how to handle the way everything is changing and it makes him fall back into old habits.

Eddie glances at their academy shirts, still too stiff from being new. “What’s the occasion?” he asks.
One of them straightens. “Oh—it’s Muffin Guy.”
Eddie pauses. “I’m sorry. It’s who?”
“Muffin Guy,” another recruit says, like that should mean something.
Eddie waits.
They exchange looks.
“They say he brings stuff the first week,” someone explains. “Not every day. Just… sometimes.”
“He an instructor?” Eddie asks.
A few shake their heads. “Nah. He’s a firefighter.”
“From where?”
Shrugs.
“He never says.”

Buck can't remember when he realized hunger could be a choice.
It didn't start out as a conscious decision of, Oh, I shouldn't eat today, just a rushing to school before he had time for breakfast, forgetting to bring lunch, being at football practice too late and missing dinner.
But when Maddie left, it became more deliberate, calculated. Putting the apple back in the bowl, eating half his lunch and giving away the rest, saying he got dinner on the way home.
