When he was younger, his mother’s horns vibrant cobalt blue, he’d attempted to dye his own in the same hue, if only so that she’d look at him, see him as her own and not a mirror of her mistakes. She didn’t look his way until the colour faded, and even then there was no affection in her gaze, just reluctant acknowledgement. Boombox felt like that same child in this moment. Desperate, conflicted, longing. And he hated himself for it, because he’d spent so long building his life back up again, surrounding himself with friends and family and people who actually, really cared, only for all of his progress to come tumbling down around him.
