Summary
"From this point onward I will follow the course of events by transcribing my own letters to Mr. Sherlock Holmes which lie before me on the table. One page is missing, but otherwise they are exactly as written and show my feelings and suspicions of the moment more accurately than my memory, clear as it is upon these tragic events, can possibly do."

Summary
To commit to paper even one of the thoughts that torment me at this moment is a reckless indiscretion for which I can find no justification, save for the certainty that if I cannot relieve my mind in some way, this instant, it will snap altogether. Lest my self-indulgence overwhelm my sanity in the following pages, let me first give one direction to myself and one to the reader, if reader there be. To myself: never again attempt to attend the opera. It is too dangerous. To the reader: I cannot stop you from reading these pages, for I know what human curiosity is. I can only ask you to burn them afterward.

Summary
My dear Mr. Smith,
Per our conversation of the 10th regarding the ms's unusual length, I am writing to propose that you delete the following text from Part One of "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty" before printing. I am sure that whatever expense you are put to for the new typesetting will ultimately be made up by a savings in the cost of printing. It has no bearing on the story, and was included purely because my readers seem to take an interest in these mundane sitting-room conversations between us. I intend to make similar cuts to Part Two before delivering on the deadline as we agreed. I believe no actual editing will be required. You can merely delete everything between ' "It does not tell us very much does it?" he remarked, as he handed it back to me' and ' "Hardly anything." ' However, that there may be no confusion, I replicate in the enclosure the exact portion of the text that I wish to suppress.
Thank you for your patience. I may say that apart from the length, there are many considerations which have induced me to make this change, and I very much appreciate your accommodating my wishes.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. John Watson.

Summary
June 21, 1891. 3:00pm, Committee Room D.
Minutes of the In Camera Committee for the Preservation of Information Security, Lord Bellinger presiding.
Present: Lord Holdhurst, the Right Honourable Trelawney Hope, Sir James Walter, Mr. Mycroft Holmes ex officio. All members being present and all necessary security measures being taken, Mr. Holmes was per usual nominated to take the minutes. Per usual, M. Holmes was charged with circulating a paper copy through secure channels to committee members for corrections and redactions, after which M. Holmes is to commit the final version to memory and then destroy the original. M. Holmes acquiesced and begged all present to note that the file number for these minutes will be MM351, and reminded all present that when calling upon to consult committee minutes it is extremely helpful to mention the file number assigned to the meeting rather than mumble vaguely about half-remembered dates, times, and topics. [N.B. to M. H.: strike final sentence as it is irrelevant and slightly unkind. --Bellinger.]

Summary
To my brother in heaven, to my earthly judges, and to any of the Kratides family to whom these pages may come.
I, Sophia Kratides, make this testament so that all who read may know the true story of the final days of Wilson Kemp and Harold Latimer. When I have told all the truth, I will sign and seal it and give it into the keeping of the stranger who was sent by an outraged God to assist me in my hour of peril. He has sworn that while I am alive, he will never divulge its contents to a living soul, unless it is necessary to save his own life.
****
Six weeks after the death of James Moriarty, Sophia Kratides meets an elderly Italian count in the garden of a second-rate hotel. A few hours later, two men are dead. This is a stand-alone story, but may be more enjoyable if you read "O Paradis" first. Watson does not appear in this; but for poor Holmes, out of sight is not out of mind.

Summary
Dearest,
I know this delay must have been hateful to you, but I really could not have written earlier. I dare hope that your joy will be all the greater as you read, at last, these long-anticipated words: I am free. It will be two or three days, I believe, before I can truly settle things here. But Friday morning, come what may, I shall take the 10:23am from Victoria Station, arriving at 3:41pm. Will you meet me at the station? Is it indiscreet? I could take a cab, and that would be more prudent. But oh, how I hate prudence! How you loathe it too! And how well--you dare not deny it--a little rashness becomes me! Can you deprive yourself of that heart-quickening first glimpse of me in my traveling costume, stepping bravely down from the train? I thought not. So I will, I must, see you at Walsall station on Monday, at 3:41pm precisely!
Ah, dearest, you would forgive all the giddiness of this letter--and much more besides--if you could have been in this house with me for these last few sorrowful weeks.

Summary
It's early in Mary's marriage to Dr. Watson, and she's helping him with his medical practice. She takes an interest in one of Watson's young women patients, and suggests that he consult with Holmes about finding answers to some of her pressing questions. Watson does--and everyone learns, or doesn't learn, more than they bargained for.
This story revisits the rather alarming facts of the ACD canon story "A Case of Identity," in which the villain romances his adult stepdaughter in order to prevent her from marrying someone else. Chronologically, it takes place between "One Page is Missing" and "O Paradis." I've placed it later than that in the series because it was written after the series was complete. Among other things it reveals how Mary Morstan came up with the idea for the Society for the Protection of Single Ladies.
One of the things being investigated here is just how far Mr. Windibank's fake courtship went. However, while sex is often implied or referenced in this story, it is never depicted.

June --, 1891
My dear Sherlock,
You will think it very sentimental of me, writing you a letter this long at my time of life--all the more so as I cannot possibly send it to you. It is doubtful, indeed, that you will ever read it at all. Well, my dear boy, the future is uncertain; and once I have committed this to paper and taken the necessary precautions to prevent its premature exposure, I will know that if I am in fact carried off by an unfortunate accident today or tomorrow or a week from Sunday, there is at least a record for posterity of the remarkable conversation that took place in the Strangers' Room of the Diogenes Club at five o'clock this evening.

Summary
I came to Lausanne because coming to Lausanne was something novel, interesting, and fairly cheap to do. I stayed at the Hotel National, where I met a number of other aimless and drifting persons in search of pleasure, or escape, or rest. I became friendly with a German couple who were on holiday in Lausanne from their work as missionaries in South America. Yesterday, we 'did the sights.' This included--as our guidebook dictated that it should--a visit to that most model and modern Continental institutions, the Maison des Alienes. The house of those who are in some way astray. In plain English: the insane asylum.
That is where I still am.
That is where I will be, it seems, for some time.

July 3, 1891
As each of the past seven entries in this journal has begun with complaints about the monotony of convalescence, the inconvenience of being unable to engage another servant, and the unbearable mixture of suspense and tedium that my life has become, I begin this entry with a new pen, a fresh bottle of ink, and the best penmanship that a doctor can summon:
NEWS AT LAST.

The good news is, Watson finally has a chance to bring Holmes back. The more awkward news is, he'll have to work with Mary and Violet to do it. Read "O Paradis," etc., first. There's a lot of pining in this.

Everyone knows that Mary Morstan is the kindest and most beautiful woman in England. It is a secret known only to you and myself, diary, that she is also one of the sauciest.
*****
This takes place, chronologically, after "Whatever Remains" but BEFORE "Five Dirty Minutes in the Dark." Violet Hunter, Mary Morstan, and Doctor Watson are about to set sail in search of Holmes. Nobody's entirely pleased about the sleeping arrangements.I've rated this story M because it has more sex than is usual for me; but frankly I have no idea what the AO3 standards really are, so if you think I've mislabeled it, feel free to discuss that in the comments.

Summary
I made the mistake of reviewing my most recent entry before beginning this one; and now, I am daunted. Compared to our remarkable adventures on board the Gilded Lily, our thrilling combat with the crew of that ancient smuggler's sloop, the astonishing discovery of Holmes inside that--coffin--and our mad scramble off the ship to escape detection, the events that seemed, when I awoke this morning, so momentous that they should be graven on stone tablets and displayed in the British Museum, paled to insignificance. If Holmes were awake, he would perhaps reassure me by reminding me that even trivial details are often of immense importance in the unraveling of even the most sensational mysteries. Holmes is, however, asleep in the quaint old four-poster bed in this sloping-roofed upper-story room.

Dear Mycroft,
Please do not begin mentally lecturing me about the danger of writing to you through the post. It became crystal clear earlier this morning that at least one of my enemies now knows exactly where I am. I therefore see no added danger in writing to you at your rooms, where I know your mail will not be handled by anyone else before it reaches you. Watson tells me you deduced my continued survival weeks ago. He has also suggested you might like to have written confirmation. I am in fact alive. There are also a few other points on which I should like to enlighten you.
