Summary
When Ted has to go back to Kansas for two weeks to attend his cousin’s wedding, he’s hit with anxiety about going and having to see old family (and Michelle and Jake). Wanting to help, Rebecca offers to go with him. But on their arrival, Ted’s cousin and her wife-to-be assume they’re a couple and are so happy to see Ted with his ‘girlfriend’ that neither Ted nor Rebecca can bring themselves to correct them. That’s when they come up with the plan - if they’re fake dating, and everyone thinks Ted there with Rebecca as his partner, maybe this whole thing with his family will be a bit easier? Only neither of them factor into this plan that they’re both secretly in love with the other. Both believing they’re too broken to ever be good enough.
But now they’re on a healing journey, with some help from those around them.

“We almost lost them!” Kiri lifts her bow to him and stands, hands trembling; her eyes are visibly wet with fear and anger. Her husband stares at his spear, lips tight with sadness and pain. Kiri shakes her bow and sobs watching him tend to his spear. “They were so close, Aonung. One cut, one slash and they would of been—“ her voice breaks along with his heart.
Aonung moves his spear to the side and stands. He refuses to see it, to even imagine a possibility where they weren’t fast enough, too late to save and protect. His wife looks at him beyond the fire burning between them, her golden eyes shimmer from the light of it, filled with memories he’s experienced with her and without. It’s the same ones their children have innocent and bright with hope.
Aonung exhales, eyes wet and goes to her. He takes the bow from her hands heavy with bloodshed and duty; Kiri breathes and lifts her hand. She places it on his heart, still trembling. Aonung covers her hand with his and grips it. He sees it in her eyes when she blinks away her tears—the immediate resolve to fight.
After the battle with the RDA, Kiri and Aonung find themselves in a new era of change and growth.
