Summary

Summary
After Hannibal leaves Will’s house in Digestivo, he is left for hours alone with nothing more than the cold snow and his pain to deal with. As he waits for Jack and decides his next course of action, he lets himself wander around his mind palace, and his internal turmoil, mixed with the freezing weather, make him unconsciously open the doors he hasn’t opened in years, causing him to relive the trauma and go mute, as he once did as a kid.
When nothing works, Will needs to come back. -

While they wait to flee the country, Will and Hannibal find themselves in a pink-heart riddled nightmare of a safe house. Unsettled by the shag carpet and silence and desperate for a diversion, Will finds himself even more at Hannibal's mercy than expected.

He finds Hannibal in the kitchen, wind whipping through a broken window, pieces of glass and hail scattered across the floor. He’s standing there as if transfixed, eyes wide but unseeing, a shattered cup at his feet.
“Hannibal?” Will asks, navigating cautiously through the glass on socked feet.
Hannibal is staring out through the broken window, into the snowy forest outside. He’s naked except for one of Will’s old flannel shirts, a few buttons haphazardly done up. His whole body shakes, hands convulsing around the empty space where he’d once been holding the mug. Hannibal doesn’t react to Will’s voice, but tenses up at his touch. It’s clear his mind isn’t in the present.
Hannibal does not do well in the cold. Will does his best to help.

Will staggered inside, the door creaking on its hinges like a sigh. Glass crunched under his shoes, shards from the shattered windows scattering like diamonds across the floor, reflecting the faint moonlight that pierced the gloom. The house was a tomb of shadows, furniture upended, walls scarred by the violence of the night. But then, a sound, faint but deliberate, from the bedroom down the hall. Rustling fabric, perhaps, or the soft clink of metal. Someone was there. Will’s body moved of its own accord, propelled by a magnetism he could no longer deny, but doubt gnawed at him like a parasite. What if it wasn’t Hannibal? What if some intruder had stumbled upon the scene? And worse, what if it was? After all this, the betrayals, the manipulations, the fortieth attempt , or was it the fiftieth? to end Hannibal’s life, was Will worthy to face him now? To step into that room and offer… what? A casual greeting? “Hi, sorry I tried to kill you again, let’s run away together and pretend it never happened?” The absurdity twisted in his gut like a knife…

Hannibal remembered seeing Matron usher another kid inside the orphanage: unruly curls sticking out from his head, cheeks round, an innocent facade. Hannibal thought he’d be just like the other kids—shallow, boring, simple. Nothing more than another story of parents abandoning a child they found annoying and unwanted.
