In an alternate universe where Erik spent his entire childhood on Vesterøy Island after his parents separated before he was even born. He became best friend with Mathias until one point in their lower secondary school years, they started dating. Everything seemed perfect on the surface. Their parents supported the relationship while their friends—despite can’t comprehend Mathias attraction to another man—treated them normally. As they get older, Erik realized that not everyone was going to be kind as their parents and friends. When Erik’s internal homophobia kicked in, leading him to engage in self-sabotaging behavior, he ruined his relationship with Mathias, leaving them with huge scar in their heart and a decade of bitterness.

After a horrible incident concerning John-Erik's former football teammates, his mother suggests it would be a great idea for him to come back home and live with her in Vesterøy. His home town. It has been almost ten years since he left Vesterøy (And consequently his mum) to live with his father in Bergen after his parents divorce. If he's going to be the "New Kid" then he's going to do it right and is determined in making sure that no-one finds out about what happened between him and his former teammates. But as things progress and he becomes closer and closer with his new-found friends, it's becoming increasingly difficult for him to tell the truth about his past. It doesn't help that he keeps getting texts from an unkown number threatening him with the truth. Nor does Thea's rumour account 'Vesterøy Exposed' & Felix's terrible attitude make it any better.
