The tower was enjoying a rare moment of quiet. These had become so few and far between these last few years that Ramazith closed his eyes and let it all seep into him. The void of silence, so welcome, so rare. This was not the way things used to be. This used to be a contemplative place, dedicated to knowledge. Refinement.

And women, of course, but what else was the purpose of knowledge? Knowledge led to power, power led to money, and money led to women. The great ladder that all wished to climb to finally meet success.

The silence shattered, that grating noise once again filling the vast room.

"Have you seen what he's done with my office?"

    Summary

She’d heard stories before, about accepting food from strangers who turned out to be hags or other nefarious fey creatures. But Marleth was fairly certain that hags only took the form of women. And, despite the something that bothered her, this man seemed harmless enough.

Her stomach grumbled loudly, deciding for her. The stranger shot her a knowing grin.

“Come, sit.” He gestured at a spot across from him, near the small cookfire. “Share a meal with me.”

Decades after Gale becomes the god of cooking, a halfling bard encounters a mysterious fellow traveler on the road just north of Waterdeep.

Still, Marleth learned much on her journeys. She learned that the Calishite method of preparing meat was far too spicy for her tongue to handle, and the camel milk she drank to ease the burn was sweet and delicious. She learned that Amnian dragoon soup somehow reminded her of home, and that an artichoke was not worth all the needed effort to get to the edible bits, in her opinion. She learned that Waterdhavian cuisine favored liberal application of various gravies and sauces, and that some of the best blood sausages Marleth had ever tasted were to be found, funnily enough, in Baldur’s Gate. She learned that she was slightly allergic to blue king crab, and that Mirabarran chestnut cheese on crusty bread with a side of pickled radish was a snack Marleth would always be in the mood for. And, perhaps most importantly, she learned again and again that no matter the myriad differences that seemed to separate her from every single person she spoke to, food was something that connected them all.

    Summary

The Absolute Crisis may be over, but Baldur's Gate is a mess.

The city cowers under martial law as its remaining leaders struggle to reassemble the government and direct rebuilding efforts. As the memory of the Absolute's threat begins to fade, old and new tensions simmer, threatening to boil. And at the center of the mess and controversy, the grand duke's son, Wyll Ravengard, has been elected as a duke of the city.

As a former Flaming Fist and the eldest daughter of a High Harper, Rion knows better than most just how deep corruption runs in Baldur's Gate. So, she's surprised—and suspicious—when the Gate's newest duke wants her for his personal bodyguard. Are the Harpers yet another faction vying for the new duke's heart and mind—or perhaps his head?

When does duty become love? When does service become tyranny? And who gets to choose?

    Summary

Jaheira and Gale just want to know why the Gazette's crosswords have so many errors.

The halfling they kidnapped might be able to help.

Gale scowled in indignant fury. “I completed my first Gazette tenthday — with quill and ink, mind you — when I was still an apprentice at Blackstaff. Do not presume to tell me I am simply overeager or unfamiliar with technique.”
