Summary
He leads her down a hallway, turns left and stops at a wooden door with a pane of glass obscured by blinds. He knocks twice, then steps away. Her shoes squeak on the floor causing a faint snort of amusement from Jughead. Betty’s nose twitches in annoyance as he looks down.
“Just so you know I’m kind of the best Detective around here.” His laughter lines are gone, replaced by hardness that only means business.
Betty squares up to him as the door opens, all her previous nervousness dissipating instantly. “You were.” She smiles, knowingly. Then disappears behind the door, leaving Jughead laughing manically.

Summary
In reality, the creation of the voting system doesn’t take them long at all. It’s completed on a late summer afternoon spent sprawled on Betty’s bed, trawling the internet for the cheapest possible hotels, as the last of the scorching sun bleaches her room.
Discussing the trip—her future—whilst simultaneously considering the past and the potential loss of her best friend, and the only person she’s ever truly and wholeheartedly loved, leaves her with a lump in her throat she can’t quite swallow; it’s like she’s a puzzle with pieces missing and she can’t quite find them. To complete her, make her whole. Make him whole. Because the thought of him leaving has her sitting in the shower until the water goes cold and her skin erupts in goose bumps, hiding her tears in the stream of water.

A heartbeat thuds in his chest and then, “Thank you for mine.”
His fingers tap a silent message across the keypad, never fulling touching the screen before he replies, “It’s ok.”

Summary
“Let’s get married.” Because graduation is mere months away and the four of them escaping to New York was only ever a pipe dream. Because try as she might, even Betty Cooper can’t make up for all the school missed for crime solving, murder, assault, civil wars and the rest. Youth was only ever a façade anyway, playing pretend like all of this wasn’t happening. That they were innocent. That he wasn’t heir to the throne of the Serpents.
But it did happen. They will never reclaim their innocence and he’s just a few years away from taking the crown off his father. They know what they were and what they now are.

Betty took a gap year for relaxation. What she didn't expect it to include, was a road trip around the country with her best friend in tow.
The fact that he was on the waiting list for a heart transplant and that she's in love with him may have factored into her decision making. Just a little bit.
