He looks sideways, back away from the gate, back towards the place where Eddie died. Gareth and Jeff and Ray are gone, their bikes with them. But Eddie is crouched over that dark spot, sitting on his haunches, picking at his fingernails. He looks up when Steve moves, looks at Steve, considering.
‘You look okay for a dead guy,’ he says at last.

Kas wrinkles his brow, twisting a strand of chestnut hair around his finger. “How d’you know that word, sweet thing?”
Steve doesn’t reply, which is unsurprising. His words have been coming back sluggishly. A consequence that Kas factored in and expected, after the near complete wipe he did of the boy’s mind. He’s fine with that. Steve doesn’t need many words besides Kas and please and more. Sure doesn’t need any memories of before. Only needs to know who he belongs to now.
Which is why him remembering that word is … disconcerting. It must’ve been hiding well. Somewhere deep within, in some far recess of his mind, probably tied to some fond memory or feeling of his past life.
And they just can’t have that, can they?

A very much alive Eddie Munson who's staring at him from where he's hunched under his desk, his hair everywhere and his eyes strangely liquid, yelling at him for breaking his records, of all things.
"Evidently not." Eddie says, gesturing a lazy hand over himself and trying a sharp-toothed smile but mostly just looking exhausted and scared.
