Might accept his affection, maybe, but not his offer of escape, and the two are inextricably intertwined to Blanc. They're hurting you, he thinks, almost pleading, the same way they hurt me. "You're over here, Father," Hawkeye called, gesturing to the cot that was beside his own. "We drew straws for who'd get stuck snuggling up to who for body heat. And you," Hawkeye teased, "not being here to defend yourself, drew the short one by default." He was grinning crookedly at him in that way that always made Francis' face flush all the way up to his ears. Thank goodness for the frigid wind he'd just come in from that was surely offering him some amount of plausible deniability.
A freezing night and yet another fuel shortage means another night of huddling up in The Swamp.

Summary
Benoit Blanc, Jud knew, was a celebrity. He had been on The View. If the details of Wicks’s murder weren’t gruesome enough, if three subsequent deaths hadn’t occurred during the course of the investigation, if Wicks hadn’t seemingly risen from the dead in a miracle that was immediately plastered all over the internet by a failed right-wing grifter, the case still would have gotten media attention merely from Blanc’s presence. But all those other details didn’t help.

Blanc looks confused for a moment by the non sequitur. "Relieved...about what specifically?"
"All of it, I guess. That it's done. I was so terrified and now it's just— all the things I imagined, they happened. Nothing left to be scared of."
Blanc hums. "After the weekend you've had, I think you're well within your rights to be glad it's over with."
Jud shakes his head. "No, Blanc. Not this weekend. I've been terrified for years, my whole life maybe. I didn't— I never felt good. Like a good priest, or a good man at all, really. And now, it's like...I don't know the answer, but it doesn't matter. I don't have to prove it anymore."
A conflicted look passes over Blanc's face. "You never did, Jud," he says quietly.

The one miracle to come out of all this was Benoit Blanc. Jud had assumed the detective would solve this case and move onto the next one, vanish out of Jud’s life with the same abruptness as his arrival. And he did disappear, often and swiftly, with few niceties or goodbyes.
But then a few days later he’d suddenly reappear: be it at hearings where Jud would have otherwise had to battle the tedium of bureaucracy alone, or online, posting statements to cushion some particularly devastating blows against Jud in the media, Benoit Blanc kept cropping up when he was needed the most.

An exploration of the "one year later" gap, from the moment the diamond falls from Martha's hand to the moment Jud pulls Blanc in for a hug.

Summary
The idea of letting Blanc do this somehow felt almost… more and less intimate simultaneously. But the idea of being left alone was even more unbearable than any potential embarrassment it might be at war with, and so he'd finally managed a cracked:
"Okay… yeah…" He dared to meet Blanc's eyes, feeling like he'd already been stripped bare before him for days. What was one more step in the direction of the literal?
After everything is over, Blanc brings Jud back to the rectory.
