Summary
Her relationship with her parents has improved, even though she still prefers to distance herself most days. They’ve reached a kind of unspoken compromise – they won’t push or force her into anything, and she won’t avoid them completely. It’s a tentative agreement, but it works better than trying too hard to play happy family. And, in respect of that agreement, no one will make a big deal out of the Winter Solstice unless she herself wants them to.
A part of her even wants to take advantage of that, to treat it like any other day just because she can. To show her parents that she really isn’t the little girl they once knew. An urge born out of spite, out of the remnants of that hurt, that betrayal that lodged itself deep in her soul the day they chose to abandon her. A way to punish them, nothing else.
They don’t deserve that, and neither does she.
It’s her first birthday in sixteen years that actually has a chance of feeling like one. She can’t afford to miss out on it. She owes herself at least this much.
