“The kid was so certain you’d come for her,” Crosshair drawls. “Quite a rescue.”
Despite himself, Hunter bristles. This is the first time they’ve seen Crosshair in almost a year, and the first thing he has to say to them is an insult. Figures. “We have a plan,” he hisses back.
Crosshair doesn’t roll his eyes, but it’s a near thing. “It seems to be going splendidly.”

Being captured was part of the plan this time, and Hunter can only hope that Echo and Rex will be able to track him and Wrecker to Hemlock’s base before it’s too late. He’ll try to find Omega (and Crosshair) on the inside and extract them on his own. He’s not counting on getting help. With Crosshair as uncooperative as ever, Wrecker injured, and Tech alive, albeit now a brainwashed operative of Hemlock’s, Hunter’s plan of escape is not quite as clear or easy as he’d hoped.

Summary
“We weren’t going to leave you here.” Irritation creeps into the words, and Crosshair’s eyes gleam when he hears it.
“You didn’t have a problem with that before,” Crosshair drawls, and Hunter clenches his hands. He hasn’t seen him in almost a year, and he already wants to punch him a few minutes into their first conversation. That has to be a record of some kind.
“You chose the Empire, Crosshair,” Hunter throws back, knowing he’s being cruel, but he’s angry and terrified. Lashing out won’t solve anything. He knows that. It still makes him feel better. “How did that go for you?”

Hunter might have saved Omega from Hemlock, but it was at the cost of himself. He knows what he’ll be facing when he’s dragged to Tantiss. The Empire will torture him to get the location of his brothers and Omega from him, but he won’t break. He can’t. What he didn’t expect was to be shoved into a cell with Crosshair and an ultimatum: talk or Crosshair will suffer the consequences.

Hunter’s glad to have them back, but he doesn’t know what Crosshair wants from them. If he wants anything. It’s the if that hurts the worst.
