Elishka looked over the graves solemnly. "Death is an ugly thing."
"Yes," he said, "it is."
"How can you handle so much of it?"
"I do what I can to respect it. Make it clean and quick; dignified as I can." The graves were awash with the red of the setting sun. "It is ugly, but it needn't be cruel."
"All death is cruel." Pain was heavy in her voice, and he knew he'd made a misstep. So many in her life were gone, taken away from her without anything she could do. He'd played a part in that as well.
Hermann didn't say anything but reached out his hand, slowly, and took hers from where it wrapped around his arm to hold it firmly in his own. They stood as such, in silence, two figures pressed together in the setting light until Hermann had to walk them down the hilltop from memory.

Summary
In the twilight, truths are revealed and promises made.
Inspired by the iconic line ‘I think he’s got a sort of soft spot for the Patrician in his way. He once said that if anyone was going to kill Vetinari he’d like it to be him.’
This takes place after ‘An Air of Mystery’, but it differs in themes and tone, so it’s not really a second chapter. You don’t have to have read the former to understand this one, but it will give you some context.
